6/2: Choking smoke from several wildfires

By Rich Jones

We turn warmer today and through the weekend, but stay extremely dry.  Temps are in the 90's through Monday. Winds could blow some of the smoke right into your neighborhood, with gusts up to 20 miles an hour today.

During my weekly visit with Neal Boortz, we talked about America's economic recovery, his upcoming trip to Jacksonville, and the antics of Congressman Anthony Weiner.  Hear Neal explain why he would leave the Oval Office with his hands behind his back if he was invited by President Obama.

Our Top Local Story:  You're smelling smoke again this morning--heavy smoke in areas.  We saw smoke and flames shut down I-95 near 210 in St. Johns County in the middle of afternoon drive.  Hear Adam Kirk's live update on the thick smoke in the area.  Firefighters say they're dealing with "sleeper" fires, popping up several days after Friday's lightning.

Our Top National Story:  Another deadly twister outbreak, this time in a rare place.  At least four people are dead in Springfield, Massachussetts.

A Jacksonville soldier is found guilty of killing his wife and infant daughter. A jury in Anchorage, Alaska, convicted Army Specialist Kip Lynch of shooting his wife and daughter to death last year outside an Alaska Army base.  He had shot himself in the head afterwards, and he survived.

An invited guest speaker suddenly finds himself uninvited.  Geoffrey Canada, the founder of The Harlem Children's Zone, was slated to give a talk at an education symposium later this month. But citing the budget crisis, Duval County Schools Superintendent Ed Pratt-Dannals cancelled the invitation. Last fall, the district paid Canada half his 25-thousand-dollar speaking fee.  Canada has returned that money.

Save money on back-to-school gear for your kids.  Governor Scott just signed the sales tax holiday into law. It'll be the weekend of August 12th.  No sales tax will be charged for clothes and school supplies.

A Florida teacher is given a loaded gun as her end of the year gift by a student.  The loaded 22-caliber handgun was at the bottom of a box of toiletries given to the elementary school teacher in Palm Beach County.  The 8 year-old student's grandma says she had no idea there was a gun in the gift box.

Mayor-elect Alvin Brown keeps pushing his agenda to grow downtown.  He was part of the Chamber's annual business expo, what he calls the starting point of his networking.

The city's 33 public swimming pools will be open this weekend.  Turns out the recalled drain covers are not in our pools.

Arguing that taxpayers should not be subsidizing drug addiction, Governor Rick Scott is working to justify the new law that requires people on welfare to undergo drug tests.  The ACLU calls it a wasteful program that humiliates people through a search of their urine without cause.

The ACLU *is* suing the Governor over his plan to drug test state workers.  Those public employees say random drug tests are a violation of their rights.

No deal-making as Republicans in the House went to the White House to talk about the budget yesterday.  Hear Jamie Dupree explain who told him they felt like President Obama was lecturing them.  Today it's the Democratic leaders who meet with President Obama.

Walking the walk, sort of.  The House began work Wednesday on the first spending bill for next year.  But there's no real groundswell to further slash a budget measure for homeland defense.

You Decide 2012:  He's been laying the groundwork for years, and now Mitt Romney is ready to join the race for the White House.  Romney kicks off his campaign today in New Hampshire.

Michelle Bachman says her fundraising is coming along very well, and that a decision on a presidential run will be announced later this month in Iowa.

Congressman Anthony Weiner says he's the one who discovered the picture that was sent from his Twitter feed over the weekend.  Weiner says his account was hacked, and he's the victim of a prank.  But he's still not saying that the picture of a man's private parts are of him.  Hear Jamie Dupree explain why this story has the chance to become an ethics investigation.

A woman swept over the brink of Niagra Falls is killed, while people on a tour boat watch in horror.  The woman appeared to have been swimming on the Canadian side of the Niagra River above the falls Tuesday afternoon.

Balloon boy's dad, Richard Heene, is auctioning off the flying saucer that captivated the country two years ago.  Heene says the money raised will benefit relief efforts in Japan.
