6/6: Firestorm 2011

By Rich Jones

Still hot and dry, but our best shot of rain and storms is today.  Temps are in the upper 90's this afternoon.  We're in the 90's all week.

Our Top Local Story:  Just about anywhere you are, you're smelling the acrid smoke, and possibly seeing the haze in the air.  We've got about 130 fires burning within 50 miles of Jacksonville.  Liberty Pines Academy in St. Johns County is closed again--students will be split between Creekside and Bartram Trail high schools.

Our Top National Story: A raging wildfire in Arizona has charred nearly 200-thousand acres.  It's the third largest in the state's history, and is expected to grow because of today's windy forecast.

The 12-year-old boy accused of killing his two-year-old half-brother will remain in jail without bail until at least Wednesday.  A judge ordered Cristian Fernandez to be held in the Duval County jail.  Attorney Eddie Farrah says the big issue in this case hinges on the boy's mental capacity.  The boy's 25-year-old mother is also being held in jail on charges related to the toddler's death.  We spoke with the boy's public defender at 8:53am, hear what he says about the prior physical abuse in Fernandez's life.

Bear sightings on Jacksonville's westside.  Residents describe it as a big black bear near 103rd and I-295.  Fish and Wildlife officials say the bears are following the trash route, so they suggest not putting out the trash until the day-of pickup.

Mayor-elect Alvin Brown promised no new taxes or fees, which means there will be plenty of needed cuts, beginning with the city council staffers. President-elect Stephen Joost wants to pool together the council aides, which will require approval by the lawmakers.

It's a matter of personal accountability.  Governor Rick Scott is defending the new drug test for welfare recipients.  Scott tells CNN that people on welfare are more likely to get hooked on drugs.  The ACLU of Florida says it may sue over the welfare law, as it did for the drug testing of state workers.

A packed house in Ponte Vedra to hear LeAnn Rimes perform in a benefit for the people of Joplin, Missouri.  Last night's concert raised 35-thousand dollars for the victims of the deadly tornado.

It's another partial work week in the Congress which may mean not much progress on the budget or debt limit.  The Senate is back in action, but don't expect a vote quickly to raise the debt ceiling.   Hear Jamie Dupree explain where this debate is going next.

Taking a strong budget jab to the TSA, the House votes to get rid of 270 million dollars in the budget.  Congressman John Mica says the TSA is out of control with too many bureaucrats.

The Republican field in You Decide 2012 is getting more crowded.  Former Senator Rick Santorum jumps in the Republican primary field today.  He lost re-election to the Senate in 2006.  Hear Jamie Dupree explain which voters Santorum is likely to capture.

Former IMF leader Dominique Strauss-Kahn answers to charges he sexually assaulted a hotel maid.  He's expected to plead not guilty to attempted rape, sexual abuse and other charges.
