A one-shot deal on rain and storms this week. We return to sunny and dry weather--not as hot--with temps in the low 90's.
We had a few hours of much needed rain in the afternoon, but not everyone got wet. NAS Jax recorded just under an inch of rain, but JIA had just a trace amount. Lightning struck a power line, traveled into a pair of townhomes, starting a big fire. No one was hurt.
Liberty Pines Academy will be closed again today because of heavy smoke in the area once again.
A smoky haze has drifted over states as far away as Iowa from the third largest wildfire in Arizona history. It's grown to 360 square miles. Windy conditions and dry lightning are likely to make things worse today.
The town of Hamburg, Iowa, sits empty as the Army Corps of Engineers scrambles to reinforce a levee and
build a second barrier against the bulging Missouri River. The levee protecting the town is faltering, and the Army Corps of Engineers has been working to raise it five feet.
Our Top National Story: Congressman Anthony Weiner says he's not going to quit, but his party's leadership is probing deeper into an ethics investigation. Weiner admits that he sent sexual photos of himself to several women on Facebook and Twitter, then lied for more than a week, when he had several chance to come clean. House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi is calling for an ethics investigation to determine whether any official resources were used or any other violation of House rules. Hear Jamie Dupree explain how the ethics investigation is likely to go. Hear some of the more creative headlines in the New York papers from Fox News reporter Todd Starnes.
Just before our 8:23 visit with Jamie Dupree we saw a new Washington Post/ABC News poll that puts Mitt Romney and President Obama neck and neck. Hear Jamie Dupree explain why the economy will be issue #1 in 2012.
A 12-year-old boy is dead after crashing a three-wheeled ATV in Palatka. Cade Beck was riding in a field on Bannerville Road when he lost control and flipped the vehicle. It landed on top of him. Beck was not wearing a helmet.
The 12 year-old Jacksonville boy charged with first degree murder is expected to arraigned in the adult court tomorrow. Before Christian Fernandez goes to trial there could be another important court decision--the DCF petitioned the court for his mother's parental rights to be terminated. Fernandez is accused of beating his 2 year-old brother to death in March.
What a story this baby will be able to tell--she was delivered on the side of the road Monday. Her grandmother had a few helpers, including 911 dispatchers, as they delivered the baby on San Pablo Road. The baby is being put up for adoption.
Improvements yes, but maybe not enough to save four northside schools from the state spotlight. If they don't pass, the schools would be handed over to a private management organization, costing the district upwards of six million dollars a year.
Looks like that bear that's been roaming the westside may be headed home. The Fish and Wildlife Commission says the bear is west of 295 and north of I-10, possibly on his way to Carey State Forest.
The top voice from the White House on the economy is on his way out. Austan Goolsbee is leaving as chairman of the council of economic advisers this summer to return to teaching at the University of Chicago. President Obama calls him one of America's great economic thinkers.
Don't count Congresswoman Corrine Brown among those who support the new law that requires drug testing of welfare recipients. Courts have ruled that you cannot test people for drugs unless you suspect something is wrong. Governor Rick Scott defends the law, saying taxpayers are not interested in subsidizing drug addiction.
Senator Bill Nelson is among the five Democratic Senators who are holding Vice President Biden's feet to the fire on Medicare. They want Biden to reaffirm his commitment to leaving the program unchanged during budget and deficit negotiations.
The land of maple syrup and hockey is getting a visit from Governor Rick Scott. A Florida delegation of business and community leaders will be in Canada for a week-long trade mission. Scott says our neighbor to the north is Florida's top economic partner for trade, investment and tourism.
