6/13: Sweltering hot week

It's shaping up to be a scorching hot week.  Temps are in the mid to upper 90's, but thankfully we have a decent shot at rain and thunderstorms today thru Wednesday.

Wildfires continue burning all around Jacksonville, and they continue to blanket the city with the choking smell of smoke.  For people with asthma, breathing fresh air is a challenge.  Fire crews from all around the area are pitching in to help in the fire fight of 2011. 

Containment of the huge wildfire in eastern Arizona has been stuck at five or six percent for days, but a top fire official expects that to rise to 10 percent containment today.  The fire has now burned 700 square miles.

Some extra gambling time at sea...unexpectedly.  The Jacks or Better casino ship got stuck about 600 yards away from its dock in Mayport last night.  60 people were on board as the ship was helped by the Coast Guard.  It  finally regained propulsion and arrived around 3am and everyone is fine.

A Putnam County man remains on life support in a Gainesville hospital after being mauled by a pair of pit bulls.  74-year-old Roy McSweeney lost his right arm and a part of his left arm in the attack.  The dogs were put down after the attack. 

Jacksonville gets some national attention.  Democratic Party Chair Debbie Wasserman-Schultz pointed to Alvin Brown's mayoral win on Meet the Press, when making the argument that Democrats have the momentum heading into the 2012 elections. 

The transition of power continues with a handful of Mayor-elect Alvin Brown's transition policy committees meeting for the first time today.  Brown set up more than a dozen committees, focusing on several topics including the budget, economic development, and public safety.  The Mayor-elect will have a short window of time to prepare a budget after the July first inauguration.

Our Top National Story:  The calls grow louder for Anthony Weiner to resign.  Instead, the New York Democrat is taking a leave of absence from Congress to undergo professional treatment.  Democrats are calling on Weiner to step aside.  Hear Todd Starnes update the story from New York City.  The Republican Party chairman criticized Democratic leaders for not taking a more forceful stand earlier on the affair.

Our first look at Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, and it appears she's making a miraculous recovery.  Photos released on her Facebook page show Giffords smiling, her hair is dark and short.  She's still in rehab, and faces a long road back.

It's the first big debate tonight in New Hampshire for Republicans in the race for 2012.  Seven White House hopefuls will share the stage:  Michelle Bachman, Herman Cain, Newt Gingrich, Ron Paul, Tim Pawlenty, Mitt Romney, and Rick Santorum.  WOKV's Jamie Dupree is in New Hampshire covering tonight's debate.  Hear about the bra and camisole that Jamie found in his room.  Follow the latest developments in his blog on WOKV.COM.  And be listening for a recap tomorrow on Jacksonville's Morning News. 

Florida Democrats think they've found the key to victory in 2012--attack Governor Rick Scott.  Over and over again, Democrats gathering for the state party's annual fundraising dinner Saturday mentioned Scott as a key to victory.

The President's re-election campaign rolls through Florida.  He's set to be in Miami today to raise money for his campaign. 

Eliminating wasteful government spending...President Obama signs an executive order today creating the Campaign to Cut Government Waste.  The campaign's first action will be to target waste and duplication among federal government websites.

Notice the price at the pump is falling?  The national average is down about 17 cents over the past three weeks.  Analyst Trilby Lundberg says lower prices are expected the next few weeks. 

The Dallas Mavericks sit atop the basketball world.  The Mavs beat Miami 105-95, sending the Heat home empty handed.
