6/16: Stormy and smoky

By Rich Jones

An early morning round of storms brings soaking rain, but a lot of lightning--which could bring new wildfires.  We're expecting rain and storm chances this morning until Boortz, then smoke returns, and more rain and storm chances during Hannity as the sea breeze blows in.  Still smoky and hot tomorrow and through the weekend.

Here is the latest update on the active wildfires that are burning around us:

The Espanola Fire in Flagler County is 40% contained, and has burned more than 43-hundred acres. The Impassable Bay Fire in the Osceola National Forest is 15% contained, and has burned more than 72-hundred acres.

In the Jacksonville District (Nassau, Duval and Clay Counties) a total of 180 wildfires have burned 914.9 acres

In the Bunnell District (St. Johns, Flagler and Volusia counties) a total of 271 wildfires have burned 9,741.4 acres

The smoke and ash yesterday led to the worst air quality in 35 years.  And the firefighters who are working to control these fires are getting fatigued, and maybe complacent--which leads to inherit dangers.

If you live east or south of the St. Johns River you're getting a new power plant.  JEA is dedicating that new natural gas plant on Phillips Highway that will help the utility save money, and pass along the savings to you.

Five days after a horrific pit bull attack, a Putnam County man has died.  74 year-old Roy McSweeney was pulled off life support yesterday.  McSweeney was working in his garden last Friday when two pit bulls got out his neighbor's home and attacked him.  The dog's owner is facing possible criminal charges.

Congress is demanding more answers about how the feds allowed guns to be purchased in the U.S., then funneled to drug cartels in Mexico.  Hear Jamie Dupree explain how three ATF agents testified yesterday they warned their bosses against gun sales that might end up in Mexico.

Sour grapes over losing the Stanely Cup spills over into the streets of Vancouver--leading to rioting fans.

You Decide 2012:  The Republican Leadership Conference kicks off in New Orleans today, featuring just about every top GOP Presidential candidate.  Hear Neal Boortz explain why Texas Governor Rick Perry would really shake up the race.

Republicans in the Congress have again balked at voting for deeper cuts in next year's budget.  Democrats argue the cuts in this budget are too deep.  Jamie Dupree has the specific budget numbers in his blog at WOKV.COM.

A government push to promote healthier lifestyles.  The Obama Administration is calling for a greater emphasis on creating healthier homes, foods, roads and workplaces.  The plan is required as part of the health care overhaul.

NASA has taken a dry run at fueling space shuttle Atlantis.  The last launch of the shuttle program is scheduled for July 8th.  Shuttle managers want to make sure that repairs to the external fuel tank are good and that no cracks pop up in any support brackets.

Former Gators quarterback Danny Wuerffel is being treated for a potentially debilitating disease.  The 1996 Heisman Trophy winner is suffering from a syndrome that attacks parts of the nervous system.

What to do about Anthony Weiner.  House Democratic leaders have a meeting today to consider what action might be taken to handle the scandal.  Weiner is resisting calls to resign.  Former porn star Ginger Lee says she never sext-messaged Weiner.
