6/20: Record heat and more smoke

Rich Jones

The heat wave continues with little relief in sight.  It's going to feel like 110 degrees with the humidity today--a little chance of rain.  Temps near 100 thru Wednesday.  Toward the end of the week we'll see a better chance of widespread rain.  Hear Kevin Rincon update the wildfire that started late last week on the far northside.

Our Top National Story:  Extremely high winds have forced authorities to order more evacuations as crews battle a pair of wildfires in Arizona and on the New Mexico border.  The new evacuations are near the southern Arizona city of Sierra Vista, where the Monument fire had already forced nearly 7,000 people to flee their homes. At least 44 homes have been lost.

Senator John McCain is blaming illegal immigrants for starting some of the wildfires in Arizona.  McCain says the answer is to secure the border.  Latino civil rights advocates say McCain is fanning the flames of intolerance.

Funny for a few minutes, but a comedian at the Republican Leadership Conference was eventually yanked off stage for going too far.  Comedian Reggie Brown skewered the President over his birthplace, and race.  The President of the Republican Leadership Conference says he pulled Brown off the stage because he had gone too far in an otherwise successful conference.

A tropical storm off the southwest coast of Mexico is expected to reach hurricane status by tonight.  Beatriz is battering the area with heavy rain bands.  It's unclear if it will make landfall.

A fisherman stung by a stingray had to be medically evacuated from a commercial fishing boat near Mayport. The 49 year-old was a passenger on the boat when he was stung Sunday.  He was rushed to the hospital where his condition this morning is unknown.

The early summer drop at the pump continues, with gas prices across Florida down a nickel over last week.  The state average is $3.63.  AAA says oil prices are below 95 dollars a barrel and expected to drop further this week.  That should keep gas prices falling.  Before you fill up, check WOKV.COM to find the lowest gas prices in your neighborhood.

Moving in the right direction...the unemployment picture in Florida is improving for the eighth straight month.  The Jacksonville metro area saw 9.7 percent unemployment in May.

Father's Day had a very special meaning for the crew of the U.S.S. Georgia.  The 148 sailors returned to St. Mary's, Georgia after months at sea.

Outgoing Defense Secretary Robert Gates is defending President Obama's order of air strikes in Libya, saying he has complied with the War Powers Act.

Congress could send a strong rebuke to the White House this week.  The House could vote on whether to totally shut off military actions in Libya.  No word if Libya came up during Saturday's highly publicized golf outing with the President and House Speaker John Boehner.

The Obama Administration changes how waivers are issued to one part of the new health reform law.   Hear Jamie Dupree explain why the feds will no longer sign off on the waivers one-by-one.  And for the first time the administration has detailed those waiver applications which were denied.

Robbery appears to be the motive behind a deadly shooting inside a Long Island pharmacy.  Four people were killed.  The killer is still at large.

Does it seem like kids have more food allergies?  A new study in the journal Pediatrics says one in 13 children has some type of food allergy, and researchers say 40 percent of those children suffer severe reactions.  The most common food allergies are peanuts and milk.

A new study underlines the dangers of concussions to young athletes.  The study says they may face a greater danger, even of death, if they suffer new head blows before they're fully recovered from previous concussions.

The music industry loses a legend.  Clarence Clemons, the saxophonist for Bruce Springsteen's E-Street band died of complications from a recent stroke.

Rory McIlroy ran away with the U.S. Open title, winning by eight shots and breaking the tournament scoring record by four strokes.
