6/29: Big rains, chance of severe storms

Soaking rains, but maybe severe storms too.  We're ready to activate the WOKV Storm Center this afternoon, when big thunderstorms move in from the southwest. Just about everyone is going to see rain, some of us could see heavy downpours.  Accuweather's Heather Zehr says we have a chance of severe storms in the afternoon. 

The first named storm of the hurricane season is churning in the Gulf of Mexico.  Tropical Storm Arlene is not expected to impact Florida--it's headed toward the northeast coast of Mexico.

Our Top Local Story is breaking news, where two people are found shot dead inside a home in the Ortega Bluff neighborhood off Collins Road.  WOKV's Andrew Greenstein is updating the story from the typically quiet neighborhood. 

A packed house of ticked off westsiders--opposed to a new landfill in their neighborhood.  But despite their passionate calls to stop the project, city council unanimously approved the new landfill.  It'll be in place for disaster recovery debris.   Kevin Rincon was at the meeting last night, hear his report on all of the action here. 

In the span of two days, threats have been sent to the Jacksonville offices of two U.S. Senators.  No one was hurt at the Prudential Drive offices of Senator Bill Nelson and now, Senator Marco Rubio.  HAZMAT teams responded to find an envelope with a suspcious white powder inside at Senator Nelson's office on Monday -- and yesterday, they conducted the same investigation at Senator Rubio's office.  Representatives for both lawmakers say they're taking precautions and will assist with the investigation.

We could see the area's third poker room open up in the Regency area.  The Jacksonville Kennel Club is planning to build a poker room across from the mall--replacing the Garden Ridge store.  A spokesman for the Kennel Club tells the Times Union the poker room would create up to 200 new jobs.

A down-payment for the group overseeing four troubled Jacksonville schools.  The Duval County School Board approved a memorandum of understanding with the Duval Partners for Excellence, with a 250-thousand dollar payment for staffing.

A historic find off the coast of St. Augustine.  Archaeologists discover a cannon from a mystery shipwreck some 200 years ago.  The team used a shrimp boat to pull the cannon from 30 feet below the water's surface.   There are still a few cannons underwater.

Our Top National Story:  The President uses the power of the bully-pulpit to make his case for a deal on the budget and debt limit.  He's calling reporters to the White House at 11:30 this morning for a news conference.  Hear Fox's Jeff Birnbaum explain what he's listening for.  We'll carry a few minutes of it live, and Jamie Dupree will update the story during Rush and Sean this afternoon.  Hear Jamie explain where the negotiations on the budget and deficit stand.

Obama and Vice President Biden plan to meet with Senate Democratic leaders this afternoon, the latest step in debt negotiations with Congress.  Hear Jamie Dupree update the next steps in this apparently stalled effort.  Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid will make his second trip to the Oval Office this week. He will be joined by Democratic Sens.Dick Durbin of Illinois, Chuck Schumer of New York and Patty Murray of Washington.  Obama's involvement represents a new stage in the discussions.

Greece's Parliament is likely to pass an austerity bill the financially troubled country needs to receive the next installment of bailout money. A deputy with the majority Socialists says he'll definitely vote against the austerity measures, but he says he'll be the only one.

The civilian death toll in the attack on an international hotel in Kabul has risen to 10.  Kabul's police chief says 10 Afghan civilians died when heavily armed Taliban fighters stormed the Inter-Continental and fought security forces for more than four hours.
