5/11: Live from The Players

By Rich Jones

Good morning from The Players!  We're broadcasting live from the media center at TPC Sawgrass on Military Appreciation Day. There are a lot of changes this year including more cooling zones, improved bathrooms, and cell phones being allowed on the course. Today, all military personnel and their families are free. Kids 18 and under free, with a properly credentialed adult. It's unlimited grounds access.

We spoke with one of the PGA Wives, Athena Perez, who's husband Pat Perez, about today's fundraiser for kids.   We also spoke with The Players Executive Director Matt Rapp about today's military appreciation activities, why they're allowing cell phones, and how the weather will impact attendance this weekend.

Another humid, smoky day across the First Coast. Temps are in the low 90's again today, and even hotter for the start of The Players tomorrow. Just a slight chance of afternoon thunderstorms, but the chances increase for Saturday and Sunday.

Expect the smell of smoke to linger throughout the day, and maybe worse at times, depending on the wind direction. The Honey Prairie Fire in the Okefenokee National Wildlife Preserve has now charred 147 square miles, the size of Seattle, Washington.
