Welcome to summer! Our heat wave continues through at least mid-week. We're approaching the record high of 97 today (last set in 1960). We stay in the 90's all week with no significant chance of rain to cool it down.
Our Top Local Story: A sign of how dry it is...a 100 acre brush fire in the woods near the Pumpkin Hill Creek Preserve State Park on the northside. The fire is about 90% contained, but firefighters are back out again this morning to keep it from reigniting.
That huge Okefenokee wildfire is now 70% contained. It has consumed more than 230 square miles.
Our Top National Story: A path of death and destruction in Missouri. A huge tornado cut a four mile path across the southwest part of the state, slamming into Joplin. At least 89 people are dead. The tornado ripped through a hospital, destroyed neighborhoods and upended cars. Hear reporter Nicole Bergen from our partner station KRMG as the rescue effort is just getting started.
You Decide 2012: Tim Pawlenty is officially in the race for President. The former Minnesota Governor posted a video to supporters early Monday. Hear Jamie Dupree explain whether Pawlenty has what it takes to win in nearby Iowa. Mitch Daniels says his family comes before country--he's choosing not to run for President. And Herman Cain made it official Saturday, saying he's in the race to win it. Hear Jamie Dupree explain why Mitt Romney has yet to join the race.
It's put up or shut up time...Congressman Paul Ryan is challenging Democrats to show leadership on budget cuts. Ryan is the architect of the House Republican plan for overhauling Medicare. On Meet the Press, Ryan downplayed the comments by Newt Gingrich, who called his plan "right wing social engineering".
The Senate votes this afternoon to block a possible filibuster with lawmakers down to a few days to extend
critical aspects of the Patriot Act before they expire. The law has come under fire from both sides of the aisle for infringing on free speech rights and other protections. But the agreement that was hammered out doesn't add any new privacy protections.
Any dog owner would feel awful hearing that a woman was arrested for leaving her dog in the backseat of her baking hot car. The dog died, and now Amanda Foxwell is arrested for animal cruelty. The Riverside woman was on the campus of Jacksonville University for several hours Friday and left the dog in the car.
Gunshots pierce the air in Englewood last night and two people are shot. It happened in a neighborhood not far from Memorial Hospital. At least one of the victims was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
First Coast Tea Party leader Billie Tucker is questioning the validity of the mayoral election results. Tucker fired off an email to state tea party leaders, blasting Republican attorneys for not standing up to the "thugs and demanding a recount". Election Supervisor Jerry Holland says the count was precise and nothing would change the outcome.
President Obama clarifies his stance on the Israeli border conflict. He says the 1967 lines with mutually agreed swaps means different borders for Israel than those that existed in 1967.
Beware if you use hand sanitizers. Researchers at the University of Florida find that frequent use of the cleansers can cause you to test positive for alcohol consumption. People who repeatedly use the hand sanitizer, like doctors and nurses, are most at risk.
