Rich Jones
Partly sunny and comfortable this afternoon with temps in the low 70's. We have a chance of rain on Friday and again on Sunday.
Today's interview lineup:
At 6:53 hear Jamie Dupree explain how Herman Cain is trying to get back to his main campaign themes.
At 8:23 hear Jamie Dupree explain why the deficit supercommittee is being told to cut the crap and cut a deal.
At 8:53 hear Fox News political analyst Jeff Birnbaum explain how Newt Gingrich could benefit from Herman Cain's sexual harassment allegations.
Our Top National Story: Herman Cain plans a series of meetings today in Washington to promote his campaign, while continuing to defend against what he calls baseless allegations of sexual harassment. A woman who accused Cain of sexual harassment in the 1990s wants to go public. Her attorney says he's trying to get a confidentiality agreement waived. The New York Times reports the National Restaurant Assocation gave a female employee $35,000 in severance pay.
A new poll by Suffolk University says whoever wins the Republican nomination can carry Florida if Marco Rubio is the runningmate. If Obama put Hillary Clinton on the ticket, they would beat a nameless Republican and Rubio ticket.
The last piece of the puzzle falls into place today when New Hampshire sets its primary date--all bets are on January 10th. Nine weeks from today we'll have the winner and losers in the Iowa caucuses.
Cut the crap and cut a deal--some tough talk directed at the deficit supercommittee. With just three weeks left to cut a deal, members of the Obama deficit commission said we're not on the right fiscal path. Erskine Bowles says he's worried Congress is going to fail.
Our Top Local Story: Taxpayers are waking up as winners following a few key decisions by the Duval County School Board. It voted to close the Bank of America Learning Academy next year--saving more than $300,000 in annual expenses. The board also approved 14 teacher layoffs, saving just under $1 million.
The School Board votes to make pay raises available for themselves -- whether each accepts one is another story. At issue is aligning board policy with a state law that governs how their salaries are calculated. Using those guidelines, the salaries would be nearly three-thousand dollars more per year. But that doesn't mean the board members will necessarily be giving themselves pay raises.
A Jacksonville City Council committee gives its okay for a poker room planned near Regency Square Mall. The committee approves a rezoning plan that would loosen alcohol restrictions there. The poker room, which would be the only one in Jacksonville, would open in the former Garden Ridge store.
A gut-wrenching start to the murder trial of a Jacksonville man accused of decaptitating his mother. During opening statements against Thomas Lester Jr., jurors saw the gruesome photos of the head of his mother, Vivian Dailey Williams. The prosecution called witnesses yesterday, and the defense is expected to present its case today.
An 80-year-old woman is hospitalized after she's beaten by an attacker in her southside home. Police say Barbara Lesta let 22-year-old Gregory Butler into her home when he asked to use her phone. She was hit repeatedly and blacked out. Butler was arrested on charges of home invasion robbery, battery and theft.
Christopher Chaney pleads not guilty in Los Angeles to hacking into the email accounts of Christina Aguilera and Scarlett Johansson. Federal prosecutors say the Jacksonville man posted some nude photos taken by Johansson of herself on the Internet.
Another Washington review of the nuclear carrier move to Mayport. The Navy's new Admiral says he wants to review the cost associated with the move, which is currently planned for 2019. Supporters of the move, including Congressman Ander Crenshaw, say the rationale for dispersing the fleet is as solid as its ever been.
The Federal Reserve knows its policy options are limited and experts say it will hit the pause button on action as it wraps up a two-day meeting today. The central bank is expected to announce a wait-and-see approach on the economy and release an updated economic forecast.
The debate over the future resting place of unidentified remains of September 11th victims is lingering. Family members of 17 unidentified World Trade Center victims say they aren't satisfied with a recent city effort to spread the word about a plan to house remains at the forthcoming 9/11 museum.
