Reorganized government, taxpayer savings

Previous Posts

More sun and dry today with temps in the mid-70's.  Cooler temps for Friday and the weekend.  Watch for rough surf and rip currents at the beaches as Tropical Storm Sean passes by.  It's going to spin out to sea.

Today's interview lineup:

Breaking News in the southside, where a pedestrian is hit and killed by a train on Emerson near Phillips.  It's unclear if it was an accident or suicide.

Our Top Local Story:  Reorganizing city government, saving taxpayer money.  The proposal by Mayor Brown may sound good and it's going to be put through the ringer this next month at city council.  We'll ask the Mayor how much his plan will save taxpayers next year, and what he plans to do with that savings--when he joins us in studio at 8am.

The final hurdle is clear, and Jacksonville's first poker room is all-in.  The city council okaying a rezoning ordinance to allow the poker room in Regency to obtain a liquor license.  The poker room will be located at the former Garden Ridge and is slated to open in February.  It will bring 200 new jobs to Jacksonville.

We're working to get updated information on a crash that involved a Jacksonville cop and another driver.  ccording to reports, the crash happened around 8 last night at Blanding and Collins.  The officer was not hurt.  The other driver was taken to the hospital.

Here's your proof of public/private partnerships that Mayor Brown talks so much about.  All winter sports in Duval County have been saved through fundraisers.  We'll hear from school leaders today as they tout the effort to raise more than $300,000 in five months.

Some changes for parents and their kids in St. Johns County.  The school district just approved a redistricting plan to  alleviate overcrowding at some schools.

A meth lab is busted on the westside.  Police entering the home of 31-year-old Joseph Kelly off Normandy Blvd, and find materials used in making meth.  Kelly is under arrest for manufacturing meth with the intent to distribute.

Our Top National Story:  A somewhat mixed message for 2012 as voters in Ohio repeal a law that limits union bargaining for public workers.  But voters also in effect blocked parts of the Obama health law.

In Mississippi, voters reject an amendment that would have defined life as beginning at conception.  And Atlanta voters overwhelmingly approve Sunday alcohol sales.

You Decide 2012:  Herman Cain vows to fight on in the race for the White House, and against allegations of sexual harassment.  Cain says he's willing to take a lie detector test to prove his innocense, but only if he has a good reason to do so.  A second woman has gone public with her allegations.

We'll be tuned in to the latest Republican debate tonight in Michigan, on CNBC.  Expect a lot of the talk to center around the recession, stimulus, and auto bailouts.  Mason Dixon pollster Brad Coker says it's not too late for Rick Perry to turn things around, but he's most interested in seeing if Newt Gingrich will continue his quiet surge.  Expect to hear plenty of talk leading up to the debate during Neal, Rush and Sean today.

There may be some flexibility on tax increases for the Republicans on that deficit supercommittee.  The GOP plan would place limits on popular tax breaks like the mortgage interest deduction in exchange for significantly lower income tax rates. They're willing to accept a net increase in individual income tax revenues of about $300 billion over the coming decade.

Penn State's board of trustees says it's outraged by the "horrifying" details of a child sex abuse scandal and possible cover up.  Two university officials are indicted for a cover up of alleged abuses by former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky.  Several news reports suggest Joe Paterno is on his way out as legendary coach but nothing is official yet.
