Deadlocked on deficit answers

Previous Posts

Warmer weather this week with temps in the upper 70's today.  Humidity will increase Tuesday with a chance of showers, then thunderstorm chances on Wednesday.

See what we're working on for the Tuesday edition of Jacksonville's Morning News.

Today's interview lineup:

At 6:53 hear Jamie Dupree explain which GOP candidates made the best case on foreign policy in Saturday's debate.

At 7:40 we'll check in with Fox's Jeff Monosso to update the sexual abuse case of Jerry Sandusky and the emotional recovery of students at Penn State University.

At 7:53 hear Congresswoman Corrine Brown explain how homeowners can get out from underwater on their mortgage.

At 8:23 hear Jamie Dupree explain where the deficit supercommittee is likely to see common ground.

At 8:53 hear Fox's Jeff Birnbaum on the road back for Rick Perry in the GOP race for the White House.

Our Top Local Story is a closer look at You Decide 2012 and efforts by Republicans to unseat Democrat Senator Bill Nelson.  Congressman Connie Mack has immediately surged to the top of the field just after he announced plans to enter the race.  A poll by Quinnipiac shows Mack is essentially tied with Nelson.

Our Top National Story:   President Obama says it's time for Congress to bite the bullet and do what needs to be done about the nation's deficit. A committee in charge of carrying out that task has until next Wednesday to agree on how to reduce debt by at least $1.2 trillion in the next decade.

Once again Congress has to act this Friday on a bill to keep the federal government running.  As of now the Senate has approved only 4 of 12 budget bills, the House 6.  The last time the Congress got its budget work done on time was 1994.

You Decide 2012:  Not much changed at the weekend GOP debate in South Carolina.  CBS affiliates were switched to a rerun of NCIS before the debate was over.  Ron Paul and Michele Bachmann's camps both say they were ignored on purpose.  Bachmann's team produced an internal CBS email that said she was going to get very few questions.

Herman Cain's wife says she can't believe claims that her husband sexually harassed women when he led the National Restaurant Association in the 1990's.  Gloria Cain says she believes her husband would have to have a split personality to do the things that he's accused of.

Maybe today we'll hear if the Supreme Court will take up the legal challenge to Obamacare. Florida is leading the fight against the individual mandate. The court may just elect one case to review.

Kids playing on the Westside find an abandoned meth lab behind a house on Beaver Street.  The bomb squad was called to the scene Sunday morning to remove hazardous materials.  DEA is investigating.

A tragic accident is how FHP describes a crash in Fleming Island that killed a man walking along U.S. 17 last night.  It appears the SUV driver didn't see the man along the dark stretch of roadway until it was too late.  The driver is shaken but fully cooperating with police.

Caught in the act -- a woman is arrested after being caught on camera stealing items from a 12-year-old boy's grave.  The family of Cade Beck set up the camera after discovering several items missing from his grave. Barbara Lamareaux was arrested and released after posting bond.  She tells Channel 4 she stole the items because someone else came to her property and took her things.

A man apparently picked the wrong place to rob.  Police say he was shot and killed as he and another man tried robbing a Northside seafood store.  Workers at the Golden Crab House say they were packing heat because the store had been robbed before.

An off-duty officer shoots a man police say was robbing a Family Dollar store on the Northside.  Cops confronted two men as they were robbing a delivery driver at gunpoint.  The suspect is hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Jaguars earn their second win in their last three games, beating the Colts 17-3, improving to 3 and 6 on the season.  They're in Cleveland Sunday to take on the Browns.
