Morning News Recap

Posted: 5:05 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2011

Do you feel safe?

Cool air returns after a soggy and chilly front pushed through Monday.  We'll be nearly 20 degrees cooler than yesterday's high.  Temps are in the low 60's through Friday when we start to gradually warm up.  It looks to be rain free through the weekend.

Today's interview lineup:

At 6:53 hear Jamie Dupree explain how Herman Cain handled the latest allegations against him.

At 8:23 hear Jamie Dupree update the latest finger pointing over extending the payroll tax cut.

At 8:40 hear Fox's Jared Halpern explain why Fitch downgraded its outlook on America's economy but didn't change our rating.

Our Top Local Story:  A closer look at crime in your neighborhood.  Jacksonville Sheriff John Rutherford admits almost no one will say they feel safer.  But he says murders are down over last year by 9 year-to-date. And he says the numbers show you're about twice as safe as you were at this time in 1991--he says it's the way we report crime.

New information in the search for whoever ran down a 13 year-old in Clay County.  FHP says they're looking for a Jeep Grand Cherokee from 2005 thru 2010 that man have struck and killed Brian Alvezios on Brannan Field Road Saturday night.  The driver took off.

A couple is arrested for stealing during the Jaguars game Sunday. The duo from St. Mary's, Georgia stuffed aprons full of cash from registers at the concession stands.   According to the Times Union, the two were caught on surveillance cameras.

Imagine returning from a holiday weekend trip to find your house ransacked, and tens of thousands in cash gone.  Thieves made off with about $25,000 from a home on Cassat Avenue.  Joseph and Pat Peto say they were saving up for their funerals so family members wouldn't have to deal with the expense.

A dangerous find on the westside...a possible mobile meth lab.  Cops pulled over the car on Firestone near I-295 yesterday, finding hazardous materials inside.  Police say there are two people of interest involved.

A St. Augustine teenager will have to write a letter of apology in addition to 300 hours of community service and a 500 dollar fine as punishment for vandalizing the lions on the Bridge of Lions.  He painted the eyes and noses of the lions red.

The ex-fiance of a Central Florida woman is now named the primary suspect in the woman's disappearance.  Michelle Parker was last seen November 17th after her appearance on the People's Court.

Our Top National Story:  More accusations are facing Herman Cain.  A Georgia woman says she had a 13-year affair with the married man.  Ginger White says the relationship ended right before Cain announced his candidacy. Cain flatly denies the affair.  His campaign says detractors who want to derail the Cain train are behind the allegation.

Newt Gingrich says he isn't the perfect candidate but he's a lot more conservative than Mitt Romney.  Gingrich says he wouldn't switch positions for political reasons, a clear criticism of rival Romney, who has shifted his views on abortion and gay rights between his different campaigns.

Continuing coverage of You Decide 2012:  Connie Mack is officially in the Florida Senate race.  He tells Sean Hannity that he's against more government and regulations.  Mack joins a crowded Republican field and is immediately considered the frontrunner.

Back from break it only took a few hours for the political rhetoric to heat back up.  The main flash point for the next few weeks is over President Obama’s call to renew a payroll tax cut for workers, which is due to expire at the end of the year.  Democrats are ready to force a vote in the Senate in coming days on the tax cut, which would be paid for by higher taxes on the wealthy – a poison pill for Republicans.

It was a very busy Cyber Monday.  IBM Benchmark says Cyber Monday sales are about 18 percent higher than a year ago.  Sales from mobile devices were up over seven-percent.  In all, a record 226 million shoppers visited stores and websites during the four-day holiday.

An Ohio teenager accused in a deadly Craigslist robbery scheme may know later today whether he'll be tried as an adult. The 16-year-old and a man who cops say mentored him have been linked to the deaths of two people who responded to a phony Craigslist ad looking to hire farmworkers. A third death may also be connected.

A Georgia man could face the death penalty if convicted of murdering a 21-year-old Jacksonville woman he met on Craigslist.  Jury selection began Monday in the trial of 20-year-old David Sparre.  He's accused of stabbing Tiara Pool 89 times in July 2010 after arranging a meeting between the two in Jacksonville.  He has admitted to the killing, but has not said why he did it.
