10/4: Here comes Herman  

Another perfect fall day with afternoon temps near 80 and mostly sunny skies.  We'll gradually warm up the rest of this week, and by Friday we see the chances for rain increase.

Our Top Local Story:  The first round of cuts are being made by Sheriff Rutherford, but the impact to public safety is not yet known.  The Sheriff is not expected to talk about the layoffs until tomorrow.  Police union boss Nelson Cuba says the cuts will affect beteween 40 and 70 officers as a result of the Sheriff's reduced budget. 

Police are still looking for the people who have been randomly shooting at cars along Branan Field Chaffee Road.  One person has been shot, and is expected to recover.  One man has been arrested for accessory after the fact.

Looking to halt a mass exodus of her attorneys, State Attorney Angela Corey is giving three-percent pay raises.  The Times-Union reports about 20 prosecutors have quit over the past nine months, and Corey wants to hold on to as many of the over 300 attorneys she has left.  There are currently almost 50 vacancies in Corey's office. 

The City of Atlantic Beach is fighting back after a last minute budget decision from the Jacksonville City Council.  They're hit with more than 400-thousand dollars to fill the costs of landfill tipping.  At a special meeting last night the city commission decided to write a letter to Jacksonville lawmakers, and hire private consultants to take a look at the books to validate the fees.

A new tenant is opening at the Landing.  Rush Street, a Chicago-style nightclub is set to open during Florida/Georgia weekend.  It's owned by the same group that owns Chicago pizza.

The Trapac Terminal at Jaxport is getting a one million dollar state grant.  The terminal has been dishing out two million a year on dredging. 

Governor Scott is praising the President for moving several free trade agreements to Congress.  Scott says the agreements are vital to our state and nation.

Our Top National Story:  Some Medicare recipients are abusing drugs, and taxpayers are footing the bill.  Congressional investigators says that in 2008, questionable prescriptions cost taxpayers nearly 150-million dollars.

For the first time we're hearing the President's reaction to the controversy over Solyndra, the solar panel company that was awarded hundreds of millions in stimulus loans, and eventually went bankrupt.  Obama tells ABC News he does not regret supporting or visiting the company.  We've learned this morning that Administration officials and outside advisers warned that Obama should consider dropping plans to visit Solyndra because the mounting financial problems could embarrass the White House.

You Decide 2012 update:  Herman Cain's support continues to surge.  A new poll by the Washington Post and ABC News puts Cain in a tie for second place with Rick Perry.  Cain has risen fast, just as fast as Perry has fallen.  Sitting at the top is Mitt Romney--in this poll he's got a lead of nearly 10 points.

South Carolina leapfrogs Florida, selecting January 21st as the date for the primary, 10 days before Florida's primary date. Both states risk losing delegates at the nominating convention. 

Congress is set to give themselves and President  Obama some breathing room to wrap up unfinished budget business. The House today expects to pass a bill funding the government for six more weeks. It also replenishes of disaster aid coffers.

Today is the day iPhone fans have been waiting for. Apple is set to take the wraps off its newest iPhone. The first iPhone came out in 2007, literally turning the mobile phone industry on its ear.

ESPN pulls Hank Williams Jr.'s classic intro song from its broadcast of Monday Night Football, after Williams went on "Fox and Friends" yesterday and talked about President Obama's recent golf outing with House Speaker John Boehner.  He said it would be like Hitler playing golf with Netanyahu.  ESPN says it was "extremely disappointed" with Williams' comment.

The suspected underwear bomber sits before a jury today, as his trial gets underway in Detroit's federal court. The Nigerian man is charged with trying to detonate a bomb on Christmas Day two years ago.
