New tax ideas by Supercommittee

Rich Jones

Sunny and warm again today with afternoon temps in the low 80's.  Rain and thunderstorms are possible tomorrow before a cool weekend with breezy conditions.

Updating Hurricane Rina:  Cancun and other Mexican resorts are emptying of tourists today as they try to get out before Rina makes a pass this weekend.  Rina has weakened a bit with maximum sustained winds around 85 miles an hour.  The latest forecast track puts extreme south Florida in the cone of uncertainty early next week.

The morning drive out of Bartram Park could be slower than usual because of a sinkhole in the road.  The northbound lane of Bartram Park Road is blocked at Berryhill Drive.  JEA crews are working to make the necessary repairs.

Today's interview lineup:

At 6:53 hear Jamie Dupree detail the large number of undecided voters in Florida and three other critical states.

At 7:19 hear Neal Boortz explain why he's calling occupiers "Obama's children".

At 7:40 hear JEA's Geri Boyce explain how a huge sinkhole opened up in Bartram Trail.

At 8:10 hear Fox's Rich Johnson update the latest Fox News poll in the GOP race for the White House.

At 8:23 hear Jamie Dupree explain how soon we can expect Obamacare to be heard before the Supreme Court.

Our Top National Story:  New tax ideas being floated by that Congressional supercommittee.  Democrats are proposing more than one trillion dollars in tax hikes for the highest earners, something Republicans are quick to dismiss.  The Supercommittee has until November 23rd to reach an agreement or we'll see the trigger of across the board cuts that go into effect in 2013.

European leaders agree on a plan to reduce Greece's debts and provide it with more rescue loans.  The plan calls for a significant reduction of Greece's debts.  The World Bank's chief says the deal may help avert the spread of the financial turmoil to emerging markets that provide half of global economic growth.

Our Top Local Story is a disgusting case of abuse in Baker County.  Cops bust a marijuana grow house where an 18 year-old was chained to a bed.  The teen was kept in the room with only a mattress on the floor.  Cops have arrested Troy Howell on charges of aggravated child abuse and cultivation of marijuana--he's the uncle and legal guardian of three teenagers.

The serial flasher is locked up this morning.  A 24 year-old was arrested at his work in Mayport.  Police say the guy has confessed to showing his private parts to girls and young women from Mayport to Mandarin.  They're not identifying the guy because there may be other victims out there.

The Jacksonville area ranks 18th among the nation's top metro areas with deficient bridges.  David Goldberg with Transportation for America says just under half a million local drivers cross these bridges everyday.  Our seven main bridges are okay, but crossovers like Edison Avenue at McCoy's Creek did score poorly. Broken turnstiles at the Skyway are finally going to be repaired, because of an investigation by Channel 4.  They uncovered several riders who just simply walked through the broken turnstiles to board the Skyway without paying the 50-cent fare.  JTA says it also fixed the machines that make change from dollar bills.

You Decide 2012 update:  New polls out on the GOP race for the White House show a large number of voters could still change their minds.  As we've seen the last few months the race is volatile.  Florida and three other states confirm some volatility.  Huge numbers of people surveyed say they could still switch to another candidate.

Connie Mack is looking to shake-up the race for Florida's senate seat.  The Republican Congressman was rumored to be entering the race this spring.

The legal battles over the Obama health law have edged a little closer to getting on the docket at the U.S. Supreme Court.  A half dozen petitions go before the justices in two weeks.

First Lady Michelle Obama is honoring Jacksonville kids for their health cooking.   She'll be at NAS Jax before Noon today to honor the culinary students at Frank H. Peterson Academies of Technology, who recently won a national health cooking contest.

The wife of convicted Wall Street swindler Bernie Madoff says she and her husband tried to kill themselves after Bernie admitted to his family that he'd stolen billions of dollars in the largest Ponzi scheme in history.  In an interview on 60 Minutes, Ruth Madoff says they were distraught and had been receiving "terrible phone calls" and hate mail.
