9/13: Perry fights off attacks in Tampa debate

We could smell and see more smoke again today.  It'll be mostly sunny with a high around 90.  By the weekend we could fall to the mid-80's and increase our thunderstorm chances.

Today's interview lineup:

At 6:53 hear Jamie Dupree recap the debate in Tampa and explain how Rick Perry tried to fight off the attacks against his record.

At 7:11 hear Fox's Rich Johnson explain how the President plans to raise taxes on the rich to help pay for his jobs plan.

At 7:41 hear Fox's Todd Starnes on a special Congressional election in New York that could prove to be a referrendum on President Obama.

At 7:53 hear Andrew Greenstein explain how tea party leaders from Jacksonville got some national recognition

At 8:23 hear Jamie Dupree explain how the President's jobs plan is quickly becoming a rallying point in the Republican race for the White House.

At 8:53 hear Andrew Greenstein explain how Florida voters view the leading Republican contenders

Our Top National Story:  A Texas sized bullseye on Rick Perry in last night's GOP debate in Tampa.  Perry was attacked on his "ponzi scheme" comments on social security, illegal immigration and more.   Perry heard boos and catcalls when he defended a state of Texas plan that gives in-state tuition to illegal immigrants attending college there, as Romney and Michelle Bachmann moved in tandem to attack Perry.  WOKV's Andrew Greenstein caught up with Herman Cain in the spin room.  Cain says he relishes his role as the political outsider.

President Obama is heading to the home state of his chief GOP antagonist, House Speaker John Boehner, to promote his jobs plan.  The president's trip to Ohio is part of a high-profile public sales push to get his 447 billion dollar plan through a divided Congress.  Obama plans to pay for the spending with higher taxes, earning criticism from Boehner and other congressional Republicans.

A big referendum on President Obama today in a New York Congressional race.  Voters in the heavily Democratic 9th congressional district may elect a Republican for the first time.  Public opinion polling ahead of today's special election shows a slight edge for Republican Bob Turner over David Weprin.

Working-age Americans are expected to lose ground when new census figures on poverty and the uninsured are released.  Unemployment in 2010 averaged just over 9.5%.

Our Top Local Story:  Amid the public push to revitalize downtown Jacksonville, one of its staples is heading to auction.  The Hyatt Riverfront Hotel is going up for bids in January.  It's the second downtown hotel headed to public auction.  We reported last week that the Wyndham is going up for auction September 19th.

Mayor Alvin Brown's communications director is in some hot water.  Abel Harding was arrested in Bradford County Saturday night for DUI.  Harding has declined comment as of now.

A 57-year-old woman is the second person to die from the West Nile Virus in Jacksonville this season, and the number of local patients is now 12.  Dr. Bob Harmon says they haven't seen a spike in local cases like this in seven years.

Four beached manatees in Arlington find their way back into the water thanks to some helpful heroes.  Nadia Gordon with Florida Fish and Wildlife told me they might have ended up on shore because the females swim to shallow water during mating season to avoid the males.  Volunteers spent two hours hosing down and eventually moving the four mammals, which weighed more than two tons in total.

We're learning more about the sweet severance agreement offered to former Florida Republican Party Chair Jim Greer.  State Senator John Thrasher signed the severance agreement but now says he didn't think the contract was ever executed.  According to depositions filed last week, top GOP officials such as Thrasher tried to distance themselves from the agreement that promised Greer more than $11,000 a month for almost a year.

We're learning of an arrest in connection with the shooting of 11 people in a park party in Brooklyn.  Jacksonville police arrested Toddrick Ashley Friday night. He's charged with possession of a firearm by a convict.  A pregnant woman's baby died and 11 people were hurt in the shooting at J.S. Johnson Park two Sunday's ago.
