9/22: Wooing Florida voters

Looks like another day with rain and thunderstorms, heavy at times.  Tomorrow is the same story with mostly cloudy conditions before we turn a little drier on Saturday and Sunday.

Tropical Storm Ophelia is moving across the Atlantic, packing maximum sustained winds of 60 miles an hour. The hurricane center says little change in strength is expected over the next two days.

Today's interview lineup:

At 6:23 WOKV's Richard Sangster updated the execution of convicted cop killer Troy Davis from Atlanta.

At 6:53 hear Jamie Dupree set up tonight's GOP Presidential debate in Orlando.  Will it be Perry, Romney and everyone else?

Also in Orlando for the debate, Neal Boortz.  Hear who he thinks needs to score the most body blows tonight.

At 7:53 hear Quinnipiac Pollster Peter Brown on the latest survey that finds President Obama's approval in Florida at an all-time low.

At 8:23 hear Jamie Dupree from Orlando, on the role Florida Independents will play in choosing the next President.

At 8:53 hear Jacksonville Chamber President Wally Lee explain the new mission and brand for the organization, and how it could drive new business to town.

Our Top National Story:  It's Perry, Romney and everyone else tonight in Orlando.  The next GOP Presidential debate also features former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson, his first debate.  WOKV will carry the debate live at 9 tonight.

The back-and-forth between the Republican front-runners comes as all candidates are stepping up their criticism of each other. The candidates are looking to draw distinctions and have shifted away from a strategy largely focused on criticizing President Obama, moving toward a contest within their own party.

Obama is marketing his $447 billion boost to the economy on the turf of House Speaker John Boehner and Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell.  A Boehner aide dismissed the trip as a political stunt.

Our Top Local Story:  Duval public schools getting a wave of help this week from the private sector but a lack of state funding could continue to hurt the district.  School board chairman W.C. Gentry says it's not a result of mismanaged funding.

Strapped to a gurney in Georgia's death chamber, Troy Davis lifted his head and declared one last time that he didn't kill Savannah police officer Mark MacPhail.  Outside the prison, a crowd of more than 500 demonstrators cried, hugged, prayed and held candles.

The Florida jobs agency that spent taxpayer money to give thousands of superhero capes to jobless people, risks losing its funding.  Governor Scott is demanding Workforce Central Florida get rid of its top employees and remove its board of directors, or else it'll lose the money.  Scott says the organization has spent more than five million dollars since 2006 on things that violate federal regulations.

Taxpayers will not be on the hook for another special election.  District 1 write-in candidate Andrea Austin has officially withdrawn from next month's election, meaning Audrey Gibson is the new Senator.

If your home gets hit by a hurricane this season, Florida may not have the money to address all of the claims.  Jack Nicholson, the chief of the Florida Hurricane Catastrophe Fund says because of the turmoil in the world financial markets, they're not sure if the fund could borrow enough money to pay off hurricane claims.

More than a year after a brazen robbery at the St. Augustine outlets, a Jacksonville man is convicted of the crime.  Dwayne Middleton faces up to life in prison when he's sentenced in November.  Cops say Middleton and three other men overtook a security guard, then broke into the Gucci store last April.

If you're the parent of a young adult, there is a new label being tossed around--the recession's lost generation.
New census data shows that in record-setting numbers, young adults are choosing to stay at home, delaying marriage, and buying fewer homes.
