Here's the reason why we didn't see storms: Accuweather's Kristina Baker says the main energy in the jet stream stayed to our north. Strong storms moved across South Carolina. We barely saw rain.
It's going to be a windy afternoon with a chance of rain but otherwise partly sunny and temps in the mid-70's. A cool weekend with morning lows in the 50's and afternoon temps in the 70's.
Today's interview lineup:
At 8:23 hear Washington reporter Scott MacFarlane update the congressional investigation of wasteful spending at conferences.
At 8:53 hear our conversation with Matt Rapp, executive director at The Players, about three new venues geared toward fans.
Our Top Local Story: Stand Your Ground--a John Wayne kind of thing. Opponents of the Florida law holding a forum yesterday in the fallout from the Trayvon Martin shooting. They say the shooting is one example of the law's ambiguity and shows the potential for unintended consequences.
Not far from the J-U campus in Arlington Jacksonville Police shot a man dead during a drug bust. Police were trying to arrest 39 year-old Nathaniel Hill at Casa Del Rio Apartments following a month-and-a-half long investigation. The officer who fired, Sgt. Val Demps, is a 23 year veteran and this is his third police shooting.
Another meth lab is busted--this one on the westside of Jacksonville. Police say we're on pace to match last year's 17 busts. Cops surrounded the home on Normandy and Hammond Thursday. No neighboring homes were evacuated and a woman who lives in the home is under arrest.
A disabled 78-year-old Jacksonville woman is sentenced to two years probation for embezzling 161-thousand dollars from a church. Betty Barnes must pay back every dime of that amount. She had worked for Terry Road Baptist Church for about 15 years and pleaded guilty last month.
A St. Johns County handyman is in jail for allegedly taking advantage of the elderly. Police say 38-year-old James Gruner would accept money from seniors for doing various jobs and then would leave without making contact or finishing the job. He also has four outstanding warrants out of Putnam County for doing the same thing.
On what would have been Somer Thompson's tenth birthday, a park near the site where she was kidnapped is dedicated in her memory. Somer Sunshine Park is at the corner of Debarry and Gano avenues in Orange Park. Somer's classmates helped her mother, Diena, dedicate the park, wearing her favorite color, purple, and singing her favorite song, "You Are My Sunshine."
Our Top National Story: Not only did they waste taxpayer money on a lavish conference, but government workers mocked the spending. A congressional investigation of the General Services Administration is underway after more than $820-thousand on the meeting. A mock music video shows employees singing about how they'd never be under OIG investigation.
Updating You Decide 2012: President Obama says it's going to be a fun debate over two different visions for the nation--telling supporters he has the truth on his side. At a Washington fundraiser Obama talked about cleaning up the past three years the mess created by his predecessors. He says Republicans are offering the same ideas that led to the econonomic downturn.
Not feeling the love in his home state, Rick Santorum is losing some momentum in the weeks leading up to the Pennsylvania primary. The newest poll by the public policy polling institute has Mitt Romney ahead by five points. Other recent polls show Romney surging.
The Nasdaq lands Facebook. The social media giant will be ringing the Nasdaq's bell when its Initial Public Offering happens this spring. Facebook could raise 10 billion dollars--which would be the biggest IPO since Google--its expected to start trading in May.
