One more dry day and it's partly sunny throughout. Temps are in the low 80's. Smoke from the 34,000 acre County Line Fire will stay northwest of the Baker/Columbia County line. We're tracking rain and thunderstorms tomorrow afternoon and Thursday. Temps stay in the low 80's.
Today's interview lineup:
At 6:53 hear Jamie Dupree explain how two government agencies couldn't agree on the $11 million expense to carry space shuttle Discovery to Washington.
Hear our conversation with Governor Scott on signing the state budget in St. Johns County, and whether he believes the New Black Panther Party should be charged with a crime for the bounty on George Zimmerman.
At 8:23 hear Jamie Dupree explain why the growing scandals at the GSA and Secret Service are overshadowing the Buffett Rule.
Our Top Local Story: New insight into the deadly police shooting in St. Johns County, direct from the Sheriff. An internal memo obtained by the Times Union says Richard Sheldon called the commander with Jacksonville Fire/Rescue, his employer, just before his wife Andrea was shot dead by police. He says she chased him with a gun and he took into the woods. He also apparently sent a text to her saying "don't shoot the cops on the property" and asking "are you having fun with the cops?".
We're getting a better idea where your tax dollars are going. The Governor is signing the 70 billion dollar budget at Cunningham Creek Elementary in St. Johns County. He's touting a one billion dollar boost in education spending--using a high performing school as a backdrop. The state's teacher union says this year's increase will not cover the size of last year's cut to education.
We'll have the Governor in studio at 7:30 this morning and will ask him to clarify where the increase is going, whether he'll push for a tax cut next year, and what he plans to veto from the spending bill.
It's a frightening thought as you head down the road--someone is throwing bricks at cars in Mandarin. Police know of at least two incidents along Old St. Augustine Road just south of Greenland. Both happened Friday night. No one was hurt and so far no one has been arrested.
Our Top National Story: More damning evidence against the GSA. You can see the picture of a former GSA chief shirtless in a bathtub with the Vegas skyline in the backdrop. Today we'll hear more outrage from politicians as GSA leaders are slammed over the lavish trip that cost taxpayers nearly one million dollars.
More fallout from that prostitition scandal involving the Secret Service. 11 agents have their security clearances yanked over the misconduct allegations in Colombia. And we've learned the Pentagon is looking at its own investigation into the incident, which the top U.S. military official calls an embarrassment.
Just before 7am space shuttle Discovery lifts off from the Kennedy Space Center, on the back of a jumbo jet. Discovery is headed to Washington for a museum piece at the Smithsonian. Discovery is the first of the three retired space shuttles to head to a museum. Endeavour will head to Los Angeles this fall. Atlantis will remain at Kennedy.
A pair of high-ranking administrators of the city's General Employee Pension Fund are removed from their posts. The Times-Union reports administration manager Beth Mangold and benefit specialist Judy Connare are on paid administrative leave and will soon be reassigned to other city jobs. The Mayor's office would only say that the move is unrelated to any investigation that has or is currently taking place.
We're staying in touch with Jacksonville police this morning on a deadly shooting in Murray Hill. It's unknown what led up to the shooting at a house on Phyllis Street, just west of McDuff last night. As police were investigating the killing, the sound of gunshots filled the air. We don't know whether the two shootings are related.
The lawyer for George Zimmerman wants the judge to step down after she reveals a potential conflict of interest. Mark O'Mara says he wants the issue to be addressed now rather than later if there ends up being a conflict. Judge Jessica Recksiedler's potential conflict comes from her husband, who works with a prominent Orlando attorney. Zimmerman is pleading not guilty and claims he shot Trayvon Martin in self-defense.
Best Buy will stay in business around Jacksonville. We've seen the list of the 50 stores the company plans to close and none are in our area. Best Buy says it plans to close the stores by mid-May and eventually open smaller stores that specialize in tablets and cell phones.
