Zimmerman walks

Previous Posts

Cool and really windy today.  We'll have wind gusts up to 35 mph during the midday and afternoon.  It's going to be dry all week and sunny.  Temps are in the upper 60's today.  We're in the low 70's tomorrow.  Gradually warmer throughout the week.

It's a common question--did the weekend rain put that big wildfire out?  We're told NO by the forestry service.  Up to two inches of rain fell in Baker and Columbia Counties, helping to cool the fire.  But there is fire burning underground that will need soaking rain over several days to put it out.  We're told this morning the fire is nearly 35,000 acres and 80% contained.

It's very wet, cold and nasty in a large swath of the East Coast, where a nor'easter is expected to bring up to 4 inches of rain from the New Jersey shore north into southern New England today. Higher elevations in parts of Pennsylvania, New York state could see up to 12 inches of snow. It's also blustery. In Massachusetts, gusts of up to 50 mph are expected off Cape Cod.

Our Top Local Story:  While you were sleeping, George Zimmerman walked out of jail in Seminole County, released on bond while he awaits trial on second degree murder for killing Trayvon Martin.  We don't know where Zimmerman is going.  We do know the state will monitor his every move.  He will not be able to have any guns, drink any alcohol, or use any drugs while out on bail.  He's also got a 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew.

We've been checking all weekend, and still no arrest of the mother connected to a horrible case of child neglect.  As we first told you Friday, a four year-old boy was found inside a Southside hotel room with crack cocaine and two men who apparently rented the room for prostitution.   The boy tested positive for cocaine--and is now in protective custody.   Police are looking to arrest 22 year-old Tara Coleman on a charge of child neglect.  The two men were arrested on drug and prostitition charges.

Mistaken for a hog, a woman is shot by her boyfriend while hunting in western Flagler County.  Cops say Steve Egan shot Lisa Simmons Saturday night. The bullet from the .30 caliber rifle went through both her legs. Simmons is in serious condition.

Senator Marco Rubio says Republicans should back off and allow Mitt Romney to decide for himself who his runningmate should be.  Rubio is often mentioned as a leading candidate for V.P. and told CNN he's going to let the process play itself out.

You Decide 2012:  Five states will award a total of 231 delegates tomorrow.  Pennsylvania was expected to be the big prize but now that Rick Santorum is out of the race, Tuesday's primaries carry little drama.

Final preparations and cleanup at Orange Park Elementary School this morning ahead of a visit by the Governor and Lt. Governor.  Rick Scott and Jennifer Carroll are hosting a roundtable discussion with parents, teachers and kids at 10am.  Scott has been touting his just-signed budget that includes an extra one billion dollars in education funding.

Police are trying to figure out how a car with a body inside got submerged in a Westside retention pond Saturday morning.
JSO responded to the Island Club Apartments on Wilson Blvd. around 6 a.m. to find a man's body inside the car.  Police say there was also a woman in the vehicle, but she got out safely.

Our Top National Story:  Six secret service agents are out, as the Colombian prostitution scandal deepens.  Senator Susan Collins says it was a potential security breach that never should have happened.  Jamie Dupree reports hearings on the scandal will get underway this week.

Prosecutors and defense lawyers in the John Edwards trial are poised to begin making their case to jurors on whether the former presidential candidate violated federal campaign finance laws.   Opening arguments are set to begin today in North Carolina.   Edwards pleaded not guilty to six criminal counts related to nearly $1 million in secret payments from two wealthy supporters. Much of the money was used to hide the then-married politician's pregnant mistress during his 2008 campaign.

A long-term snapshot of the finances of Social Security and Medicare are to be released by trustees today in annual financial reports. An aging population and the sluggish economy are putting a drag on both programs. Trustees say both programs are on a path to become insolvent in coming decades unless Congress takes corrective actions.

The FBI is bringing in a search dog to look for a 6-year-old Arizona girl who disappeared from her home over the weekend.  The parents of Isabel Celis say they woke up Saturday morning to find her missing.   Investigators say there are suspicious circumstances surrounding where someone could have gotten into the Tucson home.
