Patchy dense fog may be around this morning. We'll have another pleasant day with sunny skies and temps in the mid to upper 70's. We stay mild through the weekend with a slight chance of rain Friday and Saturday.
Today's interview lineup:
At 6:53 hear Jamie Dupree explain how the White House is repeating one specific phrase in the fiscal cliff talks.
At 8:23 hear Jamie Dupree explain how Democrats are trying to force a vote on the Bush tax rates.
Our Top National Story: Still no breakthrough in the fiscal cliff talks. The White House is adamant there will be NO deal that does not include a tax hike for the rich. Some more conservative Republicans are furious over moves this week to punish certain GOP lawmakers by taking away key committee assignments.
Paul Ryan and Marco Rubio are laying out pathways for their Republican Party. They appeared at a dinner hosted by the foundation of the late Jack Kemp. Rubio says big government has never worked. And he called for simplifying the tax code, and generating new revenue by creating new taxPAYERS, not new taxes.
Our Top Local Story: Gross exercise of poor judgement. Holiday Hill Principal Denise Ahern is paying the price for alleged erratic and sexual behavior in the prsence of students. We've gone through more than 20 pages of investigation to find claims she licked windows, stared at trees, and danced provocatively in the presence of students. Because there were no prior complaints on Ahern, she was suspended 30 days and demoted.
We're reading new court records in the George Zimmerman investigation that shows FBI agents talked to Zimmerman's neighbors about his racial attitudes. The agents also interviewed a former co-worker of Zimmerman, as well as a resident about the legacy of racism in the city of Sanford. Zimmerman is charged with fatally shooting Travyon Martin last February. He claims self defense under Florida's Stand Your Ground law.
The man charged with leading Florida's Department of Economic Opportunity is resigning following reports he collected unemployment benefits nearly two years while also collecting a severance. Hunting Deutsch will step down December 14th from his $140,000 a year job. He told the Florida Current that he collected unemployment benefits between 2009 and 2011, after getting laid off in a bank merger. Governor Scott says Deutsch made the right call by resigning.
We hear the father of Jordan Davis calling for a repeal of Stand Your Ground in Florida. Davis was shot at a southside gas station during an apparent argument over loud music. Michael Dunn is charged with 2nd degree murder and his attorney may argue Stand Your Ground. Ron Davis tells our news partner Channel 4 gun violence is out of control.
We find another push in Florida to allow the children of undocumented adults a path to tuition. Jacksonville State Representative Reggie Fullwood just filed the bill, after a federal judge in September ordered American-born children must be allowed to attend college under the same rules as other students. This is different from the Dream Act because it only deals with children who are American citizens by virtue of being born in the United States.
A second tragedy for one Jacksonville family. 25-year-old Lauren DuFresne was killed while vacationing in Mexico. She was on the terrace of her hotel room when a concrete beam fell on her head and chest, knocking her unconscious. She was rushed to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead. 14 years ago, Lauren's two-and-a-half-year-old sister died in a freak accident. She was sticking her head out of a car window when she accidentally rolled up the power window.
The man arrested in connection with his girlfriend's murder will appear in court this morning. Police arrested 27-year-old Prince Sanders last night. Sanders has a lengthy rap sheet, including 7 arrests over the last 8 years.
An Atlantic Beach man is charged with manslaughter in the death of his 63-year-old aunt. The police report we've obtained says 39-year-old Brian Lagitch admitted that he punched his aunt in the face after she had pushed him during an argument at his home on 13th Street West. Nancy Waldron died at Shands as a result of her injuries, so police upgraded the initial charge of felony battery to manslaughter. Lagitch is due in court this morning.
The suspect in the death of a subway rider who was pushed onto the tracks has implicated himself in the crime. New York City police say he was taken into custody after investigators spotted a man fitting the description of the assailant on a security video. A photo of the man taken just before he was hit by the train appeared on the cover of the New York Post, sparking outrage.
The woman who was listed as the world's oldest person has died at age 116. According to her son, Besse Cooper died peacefully at a Georgia nursing home. An official with Guinness World Records says the title of world's oldest woman now belongs to 115-year-old Dina Manfredini of Johnston, Iowa.
