Cold morning, warm afternoon. That trend will be here the next few days. We have mostly sunny conditions and temps in the mid-70's today and tomorrow. A front slides through Thursday night and we turn much cooler and windy for the weekend. Temps Friday will struggle to reach 60.
Today's interview lineup:
At 6:53 hear Jamie Dupree explain what investigators found on security at the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi.
At 8:23 hear Jamie Dupree describe how the White House is taking the first step in policy changes following the Newtown massacre.
Our Top Local Story: An innocent four year-old boy, sitting on the couch, becomes another gunshot victim. New this morning, his family tells our news partner Channel 4 the boy is home from the hospital following last night's shooting in which a bullet grazed his head. Police rushed to the house last night on Danville Avenue in Sherwood Forest, not far from the Trout River. Police say it appears to be a random act, and they don't have any witnesses to the shooting.
We've learned President Obama today will launch an administration-wide effort to create new policies aimed at preventing another mass school shooting. We'll hear him tap Vice President Biden to lead the process during an announcement from the White House today. But we are told not to expect any major policy decisions today.
We're getting some new insight into a possible motive behind last Friday's massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Fox News is reporting a fear of being committed to a psychiatric facility may have caused Adam Lanza to snap and go on his shooting rampage. It quotes a resident of Newtown as saying Adam was aware of his mother petitioning a court for conservatorship and her plans to have him committed.
Tensions are running high in the shattered community of Newtown, as grieving families and townspeople are colliding with the media mob reporting on the shootings and the funerals. Police walked children to parents waiting in cars to protect them from the cameras and many parents yelled at reporters to leave their children and the town alone.
We have a better idea what immediate security changes will be implemented in Duval Public Schools after the holiday break. Superintendent Dr. Nikolai Vitti plans to increase police presence in elementary schools. Right now they are assigned to middle and high schools.
Our Top National Story: Systematic failure. An independent panel charged with investigating the deadly September 11th attack in Libya that killed a U.S. Amassador and three other Americans has concluded systematic management failures at the State Department led to grossly inadequate security that left the diplomatic mission vulnerable. See the five big findings in the report here.
The man who was behind the wheel of a truck that killed a young father is sentenced to six months in jail. We first told you in August about the death of Taylor Evans outside the Jacksonville Landing. Prosecutors say Brian Patterson was driving the truck that ran over Evans during a chaotic fight that Patterson was trying to escape. As part of his sentence Patterson will spend one year on probation and his license will be suspended for one year. He's also facing another DUI charge in Baker County after he was pulled over in late November.
Survey says: An uphill climb. A poll by Quinnipiac University finds 52% of registered Florida voters say Rick Scott does not deserve a second term. And perhaps more telling, 53% of Republicans think another Republican should run against Scott.
Former Governor Charlie Crist, who just finalized his switch to the Democratic Party, has a 47% favorable rating.
