Our Top National Story:  It's a white hot political battle in Washington over this payroll tax cut extension.  Congressional bargainers agreed early this morning to extend the payroll tax to the end of the year. It would also extend benefits for the long term unemployed and save doctors from a big cut in Medicare fees.  It won't be paid for in full.  Savings include a plan to auction off wireless spectrum and force new federal workers to pay more for their pension. 

Our Top Local Story:  A day after we told you the JTA was getting $38 million federal dollars to improve its bus service, we find reports of shoddy hiring and oversight of its drivers.  Three employees have been fired for not doing their homework on the hires.  The Times Union investigation shows some drivers had past violent crime arrests and others with suspended or revoked licenses. 

New details on the price you're paying for Mayor Brown's travel expenses.  Taxpayers have paid at least $15,000  on the Mayor's travel since he took office.  A spokesman says the travel has resulted in a 10 million dollar grant to boost port business. 

Florida businesses could save more than $100 million in taxes next year and you would get another tax free holiday.  That's all IF the governor's corporate tax break plan gets through the Senate.  A sticking point for democrats is the requirement that businesses prove they do not have union workers in order to qualify for the tax break.

The verdict is in on the father on trial for the accidental deaths of his two children.  That verdict, however, will remain sealed until the conclusion of his wife's trial.  The couple is accused of leaving their kids home alone several times, including the day they drowned in a neighbor's pool.

An Orange Park used car salesman faces up to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to federal wire fraud and identity theft charges.  32-year-old Bryan Copeland used other people's personal information without their consent to file bogus federal income tax returns, bilking the federal government out of five-million dollars.

Residents along County Road 210 in St. Johns County on edge as at least 14 cars are broken into in a single night. Police say in all of the break-ins, the car doors were unlocked.

Instead of seeing their pay cut end, Jacksonville firefighters are now being asked to take an additional one.  Firefighters afreed to a two-percent pay cut for two years in their 2010 contract with the city.  The Times-Union reports as talks on a new contract get underway, the city says it will ask firefighters to take an additional one-percent cut.

The roll your own cigarette shops in Florida could be rolled out of existence.  The businesses are fighting a plan to classify them as manufacturers, so the state can collect the cigarette tax.  It costs about half as much as factory-made cigarettes when you use the rollers machine at these shops.

An Orange Park High School football player pleads guilty to rape.  17-year-old Sherrod Lawson admitting in juvenile court to raping a teenage girl back in August.  Another 17-year-old, Kiari Hill, initially pleaded guilty to three charges but changed his mind. Without a plea, his case could be moved to adult court.

The underwear bomber appears in a federal court in Detroit today to receive a mandatory life sentence. Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab pleaded guilty to trying to blow up a Detroit-bound airliner on Christmas Day 2009.

They want a grown up conversation.  Republican Senators Tom Coburn and Richard Burr are unveiling a Medicare rescue plan today.  It would speed up the transition to private health insurance for many seniors and gradually increase the age for eligibility.

Fans of Whitney Houston will be able to see her funeral online.  Saturday's funeral in Newark is private but fans will be able to watch it at Noon on livestream.com.  No public memorial is planned.

A starving teenager is found wandering barefoot in the cold.  She's apparently been abused for years.  The 15 year-old from Madison, Wisconsin is just 70 pounds.  Cops say she was forced to live in an unfinished basement for years and eat her own feces.
