Windy, warm and maybe rainy at times today. Temps in the low 80's and wind gusts could be as strong as 30 miles an hour. We're tracking storms tomorrow afternoon as a front slides through. Much cooler for the weekend, and it's dry.
Today's interview lineup:
At 6:23 hear Roxy Tyler's story of a local family who lost their son to a hit and run driver, and how your efforts helped them pay for the funeral.
At 6:53 hear Jamie Dupree explain why Rick Santorum seemed to be a step slower than previous debate performances.
At 7:19 hear Neal Boortz explain why Ron Paul had the best debate performance, Rick Santorum the worst.
At 8:23 hear Jamie Dupree explain why Santorum can afford to lose Michigan, but Romney may not.
At 8:53 hear RNC Chairman Reince Priebus blast the Obama White House handling of the Keystone oil pipeline.
Our Top National Story: The 20th debate of the GOP primary race once again showcases the topsy turvy nature of the fight. As Jamie Dupree reports, Mitt Romney tangled with Rick Santorum. Newt Gingrich regained some lost footing and Ron Paul delighted his supporters in Mesa, Arizona.
The Arizona and Michigan primaries are next Tuesday. Today, Mitt Romney will spend time in his home state, Michigan, hoping to avoid an upset by Rick Santorum.
President Obama will be in south Florida, giving a speech in Miami on gas prices and energy. Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus is blasting the President for stopping the Keystone Pipeline development and standing in the way of energy independence.
The mother of the war correspondent killed in Syria says she was planning on leaving the country the next day. Sunday Times reporter Marie Colvin was killed during a shelling of a temporary press headquarters in Syria. She had been a war reporter for over 20 years.
The violent protests continue in Afghanistan. They're trying to break into an American military base to vent about this week's Koran burning. NATO is still investigating. So far four people have died in fighting between protesters and police.
Our Top Local Story: Taxpayer sticker shock. Jacksonville may be on the hook for half a billion dollars over the next 30 years. We're waiting on a ruling from a federal judge in a lawsuit over city workers who failed physicals and were steered into social security instead of the city's pension plan.
Calling it fiscally irresponsible, a local watchdog is pushing Jacksonville city council to spend more than $140,000 to fund a new ethics office. Concerned Taxpayers of Duval County says it's critical to have an independent ethical and anti-corruption oversight of all city functions. City Council is debating the idea now--a final vote does not appear to be scheduled.
We'll be watching the debate today over big cuts to Florida's public universities. The state senate is taking up its $71 billion budget that includes a $400 million cut to the universities. The House has already passed its version of the budget. The two sides have until March 9th to come to agreement.
One week from today, you'll be able to go all-in at the new BestBet Jacksonville. The poker room will open its doors on March 1st. It's located on Monument Road across from Regency Square Mall. It just got done hiring about 200 people.
Sailing off into the sunset. The U.S.S. Boone will be retired in a decommissioning ceremony at Mayport today. It's one of three frigates that the Navy will retire at Mayport this year. All 11 frigates will be decommissioned by 2015.
Trial is underway for the mother accused of manslaughter in the accidental drownings of her two children. Police say the kids were left alone when they wandered to a neighbor's pool and went in. The father's trial is over and the verdict is in. That verdict is sealed until the mother's trial is over.
