A fantastic January weekend, temps in the 70's. Our next chance of rain comes Monday but it stays warm into next week.
Today's interview lineup:
At 6:53 hear Jamie Dupree reset the key moments in the GOP debate in South Carolina.
At 8:23 hear Jamie Dupree explain how South Carolina could dramatically alter the GOP race.
Our Top National Story: A debate that went off the charts from the start. CNN's John King asked Gingrich about claims by his ex-wife, and Gingrich blasting CNN. He says the destructive, vicious, negative nature of much of the news media makes it harder to govern this country, harder to attract decent people to run for public office.
The crush of campaign ad spending in South Carolina has swollen to more than $12 million so far, with candidates and independent groups paying top dollar to elbow for room in the state's advertising marketplace.
The fireworks go off in Jacksonville next week. The CNN debate at UNF is Thursday at 8pm. We'll carry it live on WOKV. And across the campus, preparations are being made for the national spotlight. There will be some shuffling around of faculty and classes but school will be in session.
Our Top Local Story: JTA is throwing up its hands over the Skyway. Because people are getting away with not paying, they're going to to make the ride free, for 90 days.
A multi-million dollar home on the St. Johns River burns. The house on Cathedral Oaks Place West in Goodby's Creek caught fire around 6pm. It apparently started in the laundry room. No one was home at the time.
Expect to revisit the deficit fight once again. The White House says President Obama's upcoming budget will call on lawmakers to try deficit reduction again. The plan is likely going to include new taxes and fees, something that Republicans call non-starters.
Looking to spur downtown redevelopment, the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce announces plans to renovate its headquarters. The Times-Union reports both the outside and inside of the building on Independence Drive would be redone. The price tag is about 2.1-million dollars, and the Chamber says it will launch a fundraising drive and will seek contributions from businesses for services and materials.
New since yesterday on Jacksonville's Morning News, the police union is moving closer toward ending the long contract standoff. In a second day of voting more than one-third of the officers approved the contract. The deal includes a 3% pay cut, 5% contribution to their health insurance and a monthly fee for driving cruisers out of the county. Final results should come today.
At one Southside school, textbooks will soon be a thing of the past. Starting next fall, students in grades eight through 12 at University Christian School will be using iPads instead. Instead of paying 700 for textbooks that students currently do, they will instead pay about 500 dollars for the iPad and download their course materials for anywhere between zero and 15 dollars.
You can bet Governor Scott looks forward to the third Friday of every month when the jobs numbers are released. The centerpiece of his tenure is creating hundreds of thousands of jobs. Florida's unemployment fell to its lowest point in 31 months in November. We'll find out December's number around 10 this morning--we'll update the story during Neal Boortz.
