More clouds today but it's still warm, temps in the mid-70's. We're going to keep the warm weather through Friday but at times we'll have more clouds than sun. Our next chance of rain and maybe a few thunderstorms is Friday.
Today's interview lineup:
At 6:23 hear Florida Republican Senate candidate Craig Miller explain why he's not worried about early poll numbers that show him in the single digits.
At 6:53 hear Jamie Dupree explain why it seemed like Newt Gingrich started last night's debate a bit flat and how he recovered.
At 8:23 hear Jamie Dupree explain how political tonight's State of the Union address is likely to be.
Our Top National Story: The first of two Florida debates featured attacks by the top two. Mitt Romney labeled Gingrich a failed leader and influence peddler. Gingrich says he never, did any lobbying.
The attacks come as a series of new polls show Gingrich in the lead in Florida. Three polls on Monday showed Gingrich with leads of 5, 8 and 9 points in Florida.
Newt Gingrich is hosting at least one Jacksonville campaign event before Thursday's debate. He'll speak to a group called Veterans for a Strong America at UNF in the afternoon Thursday. The group says President Obama's proposed cuts to the military underscores the need for a different direction.
The Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation paid Newt Gingrich's consulting firm a 25-thousand-dollar monthly retainer fee in 2006, for a total of 300-thousand dollars. The contract agreement with Freddie Mac called for "consulting and related services."
Mitt Romney just released his 2010 tax returns. They show that he paid about three-million dollars on mostly investment income of $21.7 million. He donated nearly three-million dollars to charity, reducing his effective tax rate to about 14%.
A steady drip of activity in early voting across northeast Florida. In three days of early voting, more than 1,400 Republicans have cast ballots in Duval County. And if you include absentee ballots, turnout is nearly seven percent. Early voting continues through Saturday.
Senator Marco Rubio is pledging to remain neutral during the presidential nomination process. He says he will not be endorsing any of the candidates in the run-up to the Florida primary.
Our Top Local Story: Imagine the next homeless shelter in Jacksonville, at Everbank Field. We hear some Florida lawmakers pushing to actually implement a 1988 law that says the owner of pro sports facilities need to provide shelter for the homeless if the state gives them money. Jacksonville is a big beneficiary of state tax funds, $35 million.
Polls show that Americans are preoccupied with the economy, and that's where President Obama will focus when he takes the podium tonight for an election-year State of the Union address. We'll carry it live at 9pm on WOKV. We're expecting a lot of economic themes including fairness for the middle class.
Politics and hockey collide at the White House, minus one big name. Boston Bruins goaltender Tim Thomas skipped yesterday's White House visit by the Stanely Cup champs, saying he believes the federal government has grown out of control and is threatening the rights, liberties and property of the people. Thomas says he was exercising his right as a Free Citizen.
A lawsuit is being filed less than a month after a helicopter crash killed two Mayo Clinic employees and the pilot. The family of Medical Technician David Hines is suing SK Logistics - the company that operated the chopper - for wrongful death. The helicopter went down in southern Clay County, but the NTSB investigation is not complete yet.
Jaxport is delaying a decision on whether to get rid of the Mayport ferry or find a way to pay for it. Jaxport CEO Paul Anderson says the ferry is in dire need of costly repairs. A meeting will take place in Tallahassee today to try to come up with ways to pay for the ferry and all its repairs.
Senator Rand Paul is talking about his run-in with the TSA. He was held by security after refusing a security pat down when he set off a body scanner alarm. He's calling for more sensible procedures.
