TS Alberto off our coast

Previous Posts

Lurking about 100 miles east of Jacksonville is a Tropical Storm. But Alberto is not a threat to make landfall. Accuweather Meteorlogist Dan Pydynowski says a cold front is going to push the storm away from us. We'll see rough surf and rip currents at the beaches today. And we'll have a big warm up this week with temps near 90 through the week.

Today's interview lineup:

At 6:53 hear Jamie Dupree explain how Republicans are turning up the rhetoric on spending and the debt limit.

At 7:53 hear AP White House correspondent Mark Smith at the NATO Summit in Chicago on the future costs in Afghanistan.

At 8:23 hear Jamie Dupree set up the next showdown in Washington, which is a familiar theme.

More than 100 companies are on hand this morning at the Prime Osborn Convention Center for a big job fair.  Congresswoman Corrine Brown organized today's event. Among the companies expected to be there--Bank of America, Merril Lynch, CSX, Lender Processing Center, Winn Dixie, and others. We find Governor Scott in Spain to tout Florida. Scott is making his fifth international visit as Governor along with a delegation of 60 business leaders and economic development professionals. 300 Spanish businesses are based in Florida, but, Spain is also struggling economically. Scott's trip is being funded by private donations.

In memory of their lost leader the Episcopal School of Jacksonville holds a solemn graduation ceremony in the wake of the murder of head of school Dale Regan. She was shot to death in March by a teacher she had fired hours earlier. 133 seniors received their diplomas -- all of which bear Regan's name.

Exacting his own revenge.  A Jacksonville man whose 13-year-old daughter was sexually assaulted punches the attacker in the face. The father went to the guy's apartment on Lem Turner Road, found him in his boxers, and punched him in the face when he tried to escape. The man went to Shands and refused to file charges against the father.

More questions than answers right now for Jacksonville officers worried about budget cuts. Last year Sheriff John Rutherford cut 129 positions from the office to meet the city's budget plan.  Rutherford says he can't make those kind of cuts again. The Sheriff says he doesn't know exactly what he will have to work with just yet because the Mayor's office hasn't delivered much since a preliminary budget earlier this month. The proposal didn't include any cuts to police or fire. But coming off last year Rutherford wants to see hard numbers as proof.

Our Top National Story:  The transition in Afghanistan dominating the NATO summit in Chicago, which wraps up today. Tough talk about budget cuts and the next hike in the nation's debt limit from congressional Republicans.  House Speaker John Boehner says the issue is the debt.  He wants only spending cuts to offset any new increase in the nation's debt limit. Democrats and the White House have given Boehner's talk the back of the hand in recent days.
