Tropical rain Sunday and Monday

Previous Posts

Sunny, hot and humid through Saturday, then tropical trouble.  Accuweather's Heather Zehr is tracking the formation of Tropical Storm Beryl east of the Carolinas and Georgia.  It would eventually move southwest starting Sunday, which is when heavy rain is most likely.  Rain sticks through Monday and, with the current track, we should not see tropical storm force winds or storm surge.

Today's interview lineup:

Bear watch continues as a 6-foot tall, 300 pound black bear keeps popping up all over Jacksonville. The latest sighting was along Greenland Road in Mandarin where he stumbled upon a honey bee farm.  Wildlife officials are trying to scare the bear back into the woods and they won't capture it.

A tattered American Flag flying in Middleburg should be brought down--that from Veterans in Clay County.   The flag could be seen driving along Brannan Field Road near Old Jennings Road on Thursday.

We're awaiting the results of overnight fire systems testing to find out if the Duval County courthouse can open on time.  The building has not yet gained occupancy certification because of problems which surfaced during fire and safety inspections.  Fire Chief Martin Senterfitt says construction must be complete, down to the last doorstop, before testing like this can be conducted, so it is not unusual to see a problem so late in the game.  Incoming City Council President Bill Bishop says his patience on the project is worn thin. He finds it difficult to believe this problem could have surfaced overnight.

He was once a Jacksonville Beach attorney, now he's disbarred and under arrest for grand theft.
Jeffrey Hanly is accused of misappropriating tens of thousands of dollars in client trust fonds.  His bond is set at $100,000.

If you're looking for a smooth way to celelbrate Memorial Day weekend, Jacksonville's Jazz festival is taking over downtown.  There will be art, food and more.  See a complete list of events here.

Our Top National Story:  We now know the name of the man who admitted to killing a six-year-old New York City boy, who was the first missing child to be pictured on a milk carton.   It was 33 years ago today when Etan Patz vanished while walking home from his New York City school.  Police Commissioner Ray Kelly says Pedro Hernandez lured Patz to his death with soda.

The man at the center of the GSA spending scandal is out.  Jeff Neely organized the expensive Vegas trip in 2010 and, up until now, was on paid administrative leave.  It's unclear whether he resigned or was forced out.  A statement says Neely is no longer employed with GSA.

If you're hitting the road for the Memorial Day weekend, you're not alone.  AAA is estimating that nearly 35-million Americans will be on the road again, traveling at least 50 miles from home this Memorial Day weekend.  Gas in Jacksonville is averaging $3.47 for regular unleaded.

An effort to prevent interest rates on federal college loans from doubling is bogged down in politics in the Senate.  Lawmakers rejecting competing Democratic and Republican plans in a dispute over how to pay for the program.  Action must be taken quickly -- the rates are due to increase on July 1st.
