Our Top National Story: President Obama is expected today to urge Congress to act to avoid the so-called fiscal cliff that could plunge the economy back into recession. In an address from the White House, Obama is not expected to lay out a specific plan, but instead will call on lawmakers from both parties to work together to avoid a combination of tax increases and spending cuts after Jan. 1.
In a new video released by his campaign, President Barack Obama wipes away tears as he thanks members of his campaign staff and volunteers. Obama's campaign released a five-minute video of the president's address Wednesday to members of his staff at his Chicago headquarters. The short speech came a day after he won re-election.
A new gasoline rationing plan that lets motorists fill up every other day is going into effect in New York. Police will be at gas stations Friday morning to enforce the new system in New York City and on Long Island. Officials say it was imposed because something had to be done to ease the long waits for fuel, which they say has caused panic-buying and hoarding.
A nor'easter that knocked out power to hundreds of thousands of new people, mostly in New York and New Jersey, also has erased some of the progress made by utility crews. Some people, including Gov. Andrew Cuomo, have lost patience and are demanding investigations of utilities they say aren't working fast enough.
Another Northeast Florida Red Cross volunteer is heading out to help with New York relief efforts. The 11th volunteer from our area left this week. She will help mostly with distributing food and emergency supplies. The Red Cross began deploying volunteers after Sandy but with the nor'easter they will continue to provide aid.
A senior defense official says seven members of the secretive Navy SEAL Team 6, including one involved in the mission to kill Osama bin Laden, have been punished for allegedly disclosing classified information. The official, who discussed the matter on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the case, says the seven received what the military calls "nonjudicial'' punishment on Wednesday. They are alleged to have provided the information to the maker of a video game. The official says four other SEALs are under investigation for similar alleged disclosures.

The Denver TV station reports that the crew made the decision because a male passenger started praying in the middle of an aisle.
Prosecutors have decided not to push ahead with the sexual battery charge facing Jacksonville teen Cristian Fernandez. The State Attorney's Office says there is insufficient physical evidence to support the charge. There was also concern about the victim's well being and some variations in his story. The victim to this charge was Fernandez's five-year-old half brother. The murder charge against Fernandez for his 2-year-old half brother still stands and will go to trial next year.
It looks like the woman who drove in to a home on Ibis Drive in Middleburg suffered a medical emergency which caused her to lose control of the vehicle. The accident happened Wednesday and Amanda Jammes was not injured but she was in and out of consciousness, so she was taken to Orange Park Medical. Two children in the car were not hurt. The home sustained about $75,000 in damage.
The St. Johns County Sheriff's office is looking for a man who shot a North Beach victim during a home invasion. Deputies responded to the 500 block of 23rd street last Monday. The victim says an armed suspect confronted him in his garage, ordered him back in the home and demanded money. He fled in the victim's car which was found on a nearby street.
