Our Top Local Story: The man police say is responsible for the murder of a teenager over loud music, is making his first appearance in Duval County court this morning. We're beginning to see the arguments shape up for what exactly happened in the southside shooting that left 17 year-old Jordan Davis dead. Michael Dunn's attorney says he saw a shotgun in the SUV with the teens inside. So far police have not located a gun. State Attorney Angela Corey says she intends to vigorously prosecute Dunn, who was in Jacksonville for his son's wedding the night of the shooting and did not report what happened to police.
Our Top National Story: The clock is ticking as the White House, Democrats and Republicans try to work on an agreement to avoid the fiscal cliff that would automatically raise taxes and make cuts to domestic programs if Congress doesn't act before January. Much of the focus during budget negotiations has centered on Republicans in Congress agreeing to higher taxes for the wealthy.
Three top Republicans are signaling that if President Obama were to nominate U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice as secretary of state, they would still try to block it. Rice met privately yesterday with Senators John McCain, Lindsey Graham and Kelly Ayotte who say they're more troubled than ever about Rice's initial explanation of the deadly attack on the U.S. Consulate on Libya. Rice meets today with more Republican senators.
Powerball fever is sweeping across Florida and much of the country ahead of tonight's drawing, a record $500 million jackpot. But WOKV's Consumer Warrior Clark Howard says most lottery winners don't live happily ever after. He says so many people have trouble budgeting for so much money.
Jill Kelly is fighting back. Lawyers for the Tampa socialite involved in the scandal that led to CIA director David Petraeus' resignation, say she never tried to exploit her friendship with him. Her lawyers released emails, phone tapes and other material they say back their claim.
Some time in Washington this week for Jeb Bush has created speculation about his future political plans. Bush was talking about needed education reform. The former Florida Governor continues to shrug off questions of his future political aspirations.
Add Clay to the list of counties signing on to a regional transportation commission. Clay County Commissioners pledged financial support to the proposed Northeast Florida Regional Transportation Commission. It would study road, airport and rail improvements in the Jacksonville metro area. And it would not have taxing authority. So far Baker, Putnam and St. Johns Counties have joined the group. The city of Jacksonville and Nassau County Commissioners are still debating it.
A 42-year-old woman is accused of stealing a car when it was left running at a gas station on the Arlington Expressway. Tracy Webb was spotted by police a short time later Tuesday, but she backed into the front bumper of the patrol car before driving off. She then crashed into an auto lot on Arlington Road and was arrested after a short foot chase. Damage to the cars parked at the shop was estimated to be 14 to 15 thousand dollars.
The Duval County Health Department has reported another case of West Nile Virus. That brings the total this year up to 29 cases, with the most recent victim a 65-year-old man. One person has died from the illness this year in Duval.
Jacksonville-based Firehouse Subs is awarding public safety grants totaling $300,000 to more than a dozen organizations in Florida and Georgia. Governor Scott was in town yesterday for the announcement, saying Firehouse Subs is a perfect example of the impact a business can have on a community, families and the economy. Tourists will soon have a new way to see the lights of Las Vegas -- by being spit out of the mouth of an 11-story slot machine and zinged down a five-block zip line past some of the city's oldest casinos. It's being called SlotZilla and will cost eleven-million dollars to build and between 20 and 30 dollars to ride.
