Warmer and more humid air has arrived. We'll be in the low 80's and dry today. It's even warmer tomorrow and we have a chance of a shower or thunderstorm. Cooler air returns for Friday and the weekend (Georgia/Florida weekend) with temps barely at 80 and it will be dry.
Today's interview lineup:
At 6:53 hear Jamie Dupree explain why the schedule tells an important story in the race for the White House.
At 7:10 hear Fox's Rich Johnson explain how many thousands of miles President Obama's campaign will cover in today's busiest single day of his campaign.
At 8:23 hear Jamie Dupree explain how close the White House race is in Ohio.
At 8:53 hear Senator John McCain explain why he says Romney cannot win without Florida.
Our Top National Story: The urgency of the final stretch. The presidential candidates have miles to go before they sleep as they try to wrap up every vote they can in the next two weeks. President Obama is set to cover 5,300 miles today in the busiest single day of his re-election bid. Republican Mitt Romney isn't slowing down either.
Both campaigns are spending time this week in Florida, Nevada, Colorado, Iowa and Virginia--states that Jamie Dupree calls true battlegrounds.
Another First Coast visit by Ann Romney. She's scheduled to appear Thursday at the World Golf Village. The event is scheduled for 11:30am and we're told doors open at 10. Mrs. Romney was last here Friday when she visited the Boselli Foundation Youth Life Learning Center and also made campaign calls with volunteers at a campaign office.
Our Top Local Story: At least 20 Northeast Florida voters are dealing with the confusion surrounding scam letters questioning their voter registration status. We heard from WOKV listener Valerie Sawyer who first thought she was accidentally purged from the voter rolls before realizing she was being scammed. Election Supervisors across our area are concerned some voters could take the scam seriously. If you've received a letter giving you 15 days to prove citizenship, call your county Election Supervisor.
Even after the reforms, President Obama says Wall Street should alter pay incentives. He tells Rolling Stone magazine there still are not enough adequate means of holding risk takers in the banking industry accountable if their investment schemes fail. Obama says Wall Street needs to change executive pay incentives that reward risky bets, saying they can yield fortunes but can also devastate financial institutions.
Poor earning results from blue chips sent stock prices tumbling. The Dow closing down more than 240 points. That's the sharpest single-session loss since June. We'll update the money watch during Neal, Rush and Sean today.
Another Republican Senate candidate is under fire for comments about rape. Asked about abortion in the case of a rape victim becoming pregnant, Richard Mourdock answered that the pregnancy was God's will. Democrats quickly spoke out against the Senate candidate in Indiana. And MItt Romney says he disagrees with Mourdock. Missouri Senate candidate Todd Aikin faced similar criticism over his comments on "legitimate rape".
Apple launches its answer to the smaller tablet competitors. The new iPad Mini is about a third smaller than the original iPad. It starts at 329 dollars, which is higher than the Kindle Fire and Nexus. Apple will begin taking orders Friday and some versions of the device will start shipping November second. Following the launch Tuesday, Apple's shares fell more than three percent.
New documents surfacing in the Libya terror attack that raise new questions. Internal State Department emails obtained by Fox News appears to show a terrorist group claiming responsibility as the attack was underway. The group is believed to be affiliated with al-Qaida. The emails were sent to several national security agencies, including the White House Situation Room, the Pentagon, FBI and Director of National Intelligence.
It's the moment many die-hard Georgia and Florida fans wait for. This morning the party begins with RV City opens to the line of campers. Activities planned include a concert, Georgia-Florida karaoke, and of course a campground decorating contest to see who has the most (and best) Georgia or Florida pride. It'll cost you -- $100 per space per day -- but judging by how full the lot usually is, that's a price they're willing to pay for the experience.
Instead of serving his twenty-day suspension, a Jacksonville fire captain has resigned. Alvin Floyd was cited with unbecoming conduct after he posted signs saying "Welcome to the Plantation" at the downtown bureau where he worked. Department spokesman Tom Francis says he isn't sure why Floyd, a black man, posted the remarks.
Four Riverside women are accused of filling out phony prescriptions of pain pills and trafficking them. They're all employees of Dr. Earl Horowitz, who runs a podiatry clinic on Park St. Police say the women were trafficking controlled substances. Dr. Horowitz says he had no knowledge it was happening.
The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is putting officers back to work. 10 of the officers laid off in 2011 have been rehired to fill positions opened up by retirement or resignation. JSO says these officers are already trained and certified, which means the cost to bring them back on will be minimal. More retirements are expected through the rest of this year and JSO says the rest of those 48 officers laid off last year will be the first ones to fill those vacancies.
