Game on: 60 days of racing

Previous Posts

Mostly dry again today with a spotty afternoon thunderstorm.  It's still hot with temps approaching 90.  Looks like heavy rain for Saturday and early Sunday.  Then we cool off a bit for next week with temps in the mid-80's and less humidity.

Today's interview lineup:

At 6:23 hear Stephanie Brown explain how NE Florida Democrats plan to make inroads in mostly red counties.

At 6:53 hear Jamie Dupree explain how the Obama and Romney campaigns are turning toward the first to primary states.

At 7:23 hear AP Correspondent Mark Hamrick on the political and business impact of today's August jobs report.

At 7:53 hear Stephanie Brown tell some of the most memorable stories while following NE Florida delegates at the DNC in Charlotte.

At 8:23 hear Jamie Dupree explain how the Obama and Romney campaigns are planning to start the final 60 days of campaigning.

Our Top National Story:  Making his case for moving forward.  President Obama says he needs more time to turn the nation around, once again saying he inherited one of the worst economic crises in history.  From the convention in Charlotte, Obama will hit the campaign trail in New Hampshire and Iowa.  He'll be shadowing Mitt Romney in both states.

This morning we'll see a key piece of information that's on the mind of many voters--unemployment.  Economists surveyed by FactSet believe 135,000 jobs were created in August and the unemployment rate remained at 8.3%.  In July, 163,000 jobs were gained.

Former Republican Governor of Florida Charlie Crist spoke to Democrats in Charlotte, saying the Republican party left HIM.  Crist mentioned Ronald Reagan's party change, saying Reagan would not tolerate today's Republican Party and what he calls the my way or the highway philosphy.

Mitt Romney has released plans to launch a television advertising campaign across eight swing states.  Romney has purchased about $4.5 million in new advertising for the next several days.  We are going to see them in Florida, as one of the most critical swing states.

Students will be wearing ribbons today in honor of the fifth-grader who died after getting tangled on a rope swing at Bolles Middle School.  Ryan Perry was playing on the swing Wednesday afternoon when the rope got wrapped around his neck.  His sister witnessed the accident and ran for help--her dad was watching football practice nearby.  Bolles officials say it's too early to discuss whether changes will be made to the obstacle course.

The JEA Board meets this afternoon to talk about the next steps in the search for a new CEO.  As we first told you Thursday, the newly named CEO backed out of the job.  Board Chairman Ashton Hudson says they're nine months into the process of replacing retiring CEO Jim Dickenson. He tells WOKV News they've laid a lot of ground work, and he's confident they'll be able to find a new leader before February.

Sheriff John Rutherford is using language rarely heard in recent budget fights.  Threatening legal action against the city, Rutherford tells WOKV News either the elected politicians are incompetent or the numbers are wrong.  The city says it's finding millions in workers comp claims that the Sheriff's Office has to pay.  Rutherford says he hates doing business with the city through central services.

A man who exposed himself to a wheelchair-bound mother and her daughter will spend four years in prison for doing that.  48-year-old William Ware is handed that sentence after his July conviction.  Hewill also spend one year on sex offender probation.

An update to a story we brought you earlier this week.   Clay County police have identified the bones that were found in an Orange Park retention park this week. They were identified as Erenio Rodriguez, who is 41-years-old and has been missing from his Jacksonville home for about a year.  Clay County officials are working with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office to determine a cause of death.

A deadly double shooting investigation in Oceanway.  A man was found dead in his bed, and his wife is in the hospital with critical injuries.  Their 19-year-old son heard the shots -- saying he is in disbelief.  Police are investigating, saying at this time, they don't know which one pulled the trigger.
