Soggy Friday

Previous Posts

Heavy rain at times today and it's going to be muggy.  Temps this afternoon and through the weekend will be in the mid to upper 80's.  We'll have a chance of storms each afternoon this weekend.

Today's interview lineup:

6:53:  Jamie Dupree

7:23:  Tea Party Express

8:23:  Jamie Dupree

Our Top National Story:
Bracing for possibly more violent protests at U.S. diplomatic missions in the Muslim world following the Friday weekly prayers.  We've learned Libyan officials say four people have been arrested in connection with the attack on the U.S. Consulate that killed four Americans. The State Department says two former Navy SEALs were killed in the Libyan attack.  Both were decorated military veterans.

Our Top Local Story:  221 years old and just a baby -- so what does Jacksonville want to be when it grows up?  It's the focus of a huge study being launched today by JCCI.   It's called the Jax2025 Vision Project.  JCCI President Ben Warner says the ultimate goal is to create a better Jacksonville.  The project will use resident input and analysis to define vision statements and to identify measures of accountability.

A seven million dollar loss because fewer kids are in the classroom.  Enrollment in the Duval County Public Schools is down about 1,600 from where it was expected to be at this time.   A district spokesperson tells the Times Union that it does not expect to have to lay off teachers because other cost-cutting moves can be made.

A final curtain call for space shuttle Endeavour.  At sunrise Monday, Endeavour will depart Kennedy Space Center for California, with stops in Texas.   The retired shuttle will be bolted to the top of a modified jumbo jet for the four-day trip to Los Angeles.  Endeavour is the second of NASA's three space shuttles to head to a museum.  Discovery is at the Smithsonian.  Atlantis will remain in Kennedy.

Will the Fed's action really stimulate the economy?  As we first told you yesterday, the Federal Reserve is going to buy mortgage bonds for as long as it deems necessary and to keep interest rates at record lows until mid-2015.  WOKV's Consumer Warrior Clark Howard says their goal is to keep interest rates "artificially" low.  Clark says it's possible interest rates on mortgages could drop right away.  And he suggests you want to look at credit unions and small local banks if you're thinking of refinancing.

A 67-year-old St. Johns County man is accused of inappropriately touching a girl under the age of ten.  Police say Joseph Baggett of St. Augustine is arrested on a charge of capital sexual battery.  He remains in jail on no bond.

You Decide 2012:  Mitt Romney is trying to shift the focus of the presidential campaign away from anti-American  violence overseas and back to the economy.  He accuses President Obama of ignoring Chinese trade violations and points to a new Federal Reserve effort to bolster the economy as evidence of Obama's weak policies.  Romney is in Ohio.

Chicago's public schools will stay closed for at least one more day as negotiators for teachers and the school district try to  hammer out a contract.  The school board says its latest proposal is in the hands of the union and that it's still waiting for a response.
