Good morning. It's Friday, February 1st, 2013.
The Big Three things you need to know:
1.) It's a cold start to the morning with temps falling to near freezing inland. We'll have another frigid morning Saturday. But the afternoons will be sunny and seasonable with temps in the mid 60's. By Tuesday we're back to 70. Heather Zehr says we ended January averaging between five and ten degrees above normal.
2.) Alabama Standoff. The 5 year-old boy being held by Jimmy Lee Dykes in Midland City, Alabama is being prayed for by so many people across the country. The boy has Asperger's Syndrome and ADHD. He is apparently getting the necessary medication. Dykes is holding the boy in an underground bunker on his property. The boy was taken off a school bus after the bus driver was shot dead.
3.) Abduction attempt in the Avenues. Jacksonville Police were out in full force near the Avenues Thursday night searching for a man they say attacked a jogger near the Avenues Mall. The 25-year-old was jogging in the Timberlin Park Neighborhood Wednesday when she noticed a man, but kept jogging. She then realized he was behind her and he hit her on the head multiple times. He dragged her in to a wooded area, but she eventually escaped. At 7:40 we heard Matt Augustine report seeing no police activity today, and only a few people out for a morning run.
WOKV Investigates: Today we find your tax dollars could be funding a fix the city cannot actually act on. Listen to Stephanie Brown's story here.
A crash on Jacksonville's southside sends eight people to the hospital, including two children. Police say a car going south on Southside Boulevard crossed the median near Ivey and hit five other cars around 9pm Thursday. We do not know the extent of the injuries.
Former New York City Mayor Ed Koch has just died. He was 88. A spokesman says Koch died Friday morning of congestive heart failure. During his years as mayor, from 1978 to 1989, his tight fiscal policies pulled the city out of severe financial difficulties. But homelessness and racial tensions soared and critics charged that City Hall's responses were ineffective.
He's facing a murder charge and now a civil lawsuit that could break him. Michael Dunn is accused of killing Jacksonville teenager Jordan Davis in a shooting at a southside gas station last November. Police say the shooting was the result of a fight over loud music. Davis' parents are suing Dunn for wrongful death, emotional distress, and defamation. The parents of two other teens in the vehicle with Davis are also suing Dunn.
Republicans face a delicate balancing act as they embrace immigration reform and no one is more symbolic of the potential risks and rewards than Senator Marco Rubio. He has outlined a set of principles for changes in immigration law that include a path to citizenship for the 11 million illegal immigrants who live in the United States. After losing badly among Hispanic voters in last year's election, Republicans say they need to address a broken system and repair their standing with Latinos. At 6:53 we heard Jamie Dupree explain why Democrats will not rush a reform bill through.
Florida is banking on a catchy new slogan and a logo featuring an orange necktie to attract more businesses to the state. The slogan is "Florida is the perfect climate for business.'' Enterprise Florida is seeking $3 million from the state and $1.5 million from private donors for a campaign based on the new brand.
Clay County officials are searching for a 69 year-old Green Cove Springs man who they believe may have fallen into the St. Johns River. John Butler, who was last seen Monday, lives alone on his boat at the Green Cove Marina at Reynolds Park off State Road 16. After searching his boat, authorities say they don't suspect foul play, and they're now looking for him in the river.
Today marks the 10th anniversary of the space shuttle Columbia disaster. All seven crew members on board were lost. There will be a wreath laying ceremony at the Space Mirror Memorial located in the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex.
Mexico's interior minister says 25 people have died in an office building explosion at the state oil company headquarters. The dead are 17 women and eight men, and another 101 were injured.
Today is Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's last day of work and as she heads out the door, Clinton is taking a slap at critics of the Obama administration's handling of the September attack on a U.S. diplomatic mission in Libya. She says the critics don't live in an "evidenced-based world'' and that their refusal to accept the administration's statements is regrettable.
Governor Rick Scott is recommending a $74.2 billion budget for the coming year. Scott's budget includes a pay raise for school teachers as well as a $1,200 one-time bonus for state workers.
