Good morning. It's Friday, February 8th 2013. We'll have a dry weekend with some sunshine and temps near 70.
The Big Three things you need to know:
1.) Road rage murder. The family of a Yulee handyman say the person who killed him will have to answer to God and the JSO. 46 year-old Thom Schadowski was shot Wednesday night while driving his truck on Dunn Avenue near I-295. Police believe it was a road rage incident which started with an argument at the Gate gas station near FSCJ's north campus. Cops are looking for a burnt orange SUV with a FAMU license plate.
2.) Manhunt for a fugitive ex-cop who has already killed three people. Thousands of police officers are on the hunt for Christopher Dorner, a former LAPD cop who killed Monica Quan and her fiancee over the weekend. Quan's father represented Dorner when Dorner was fired. Police say they've found his truck, which was set on fire. We have also learned Dorner sent a package to CNN's Anderson Cooper that included an LAPD commemorative medallion with bullet holes in it.
3.) New York City and Boston are bracing for a wild winter blast starting this morning. Some areas could see up to two feet of snow. Wind gusts up to 75 miles an hour could lead to huge drifts. We're already seeing flight delays and cancellations at Jacksonville International Airport.
Two people are shot near 38th Street Town Homes. We first got word of it around Midnight. We're told a man who was shot multiple times has life threatening injuries. A woman was shot in the foot and has non-life threatening injuries. Police are not sure if it's the same suspect involved.
It was a mess all morning yesterday on I-95 in St. Johns County. Here is what happened: A St. Augustine woman rear-ended a hazmat truck and got out of her car. That's when another driver swerved to avoid her, causing another crash. FHP says several smaller accidents happened as people were stopping. Three people are hospitalized with serious to critical injuries.
It's an estimated $50 million project but there's no funding for it now. Still, the Jacksonville City Council President wants to take a look at how we could get a new scoreboard at EverBank Field. Bill Bishop says the city cannot afford it right now. But he hopes the Jaguars come up with some new ideas to make sure the fan experience is at its best.
Jimmy Buffett packed the Veterans Memorial Arena last night, and we're hearing that some city leaders want to bring that kind of a crowd to the Equestrian Center on Normandy Boulevard. Councilman Doyle Carter tells our partner Action News he's putting out a request for proposals next week to come up with ideas to boost business at the center. He thinks turning it into a non-profit might work. The ten year old building originally cost $22 million from the taxpayers and has since gotten $18 million for improvements. In the last three years, the center brought in less than $1 million.
A private outreach for support is on in Washington for background checks on gun purchases. A small, bipartisan group of senators is quietly trying to reach a compromise. A deal could give political momentum to one of the key elements of President Obama's gun-control plan. At 8:23 we heard Jamie Dupree explain how much attention the President is likely to give gun controls in his State of the Union address next week.
Senate Intelligence Committee Chairwoman Dianne Feinstein wants to open more of the drone program to the public so U.S. officials can correct what she says are exaggerated reports of civilian casualties. Her comment came after CIA director nominee John Brennan's vigorous defense of drone strikes to kill terror suspects during his confirmation hearing. At 6:53 we heard Jamie Dupree explain why the drone issue is not likely to derail Brennan's confirmation.
