Good morning. It's Tuesday, February 12th, 2013.
The Big Three things you need to know:
1.) State of the Union. You'll hear it live beginning at 9pm today on WOKV. The White House is arguing repeatedly the theme of tonight's speech will be the economy. Obama will make a case for measures and proposals that he says will boost job creation and put the economy on a more upward trajectory. His economic blueprint represents unfinished business.
Immigration reform is likely to be another key point. Several immigrants who came here illegally will be guests of Democrat lawmakers, as Jamie Dupree told us at 8:23 on Jacksonville's Morning News.
But Jamie Dupree reports many Democrats expect to hear a big push on guns and gun violence. A number of Democrats have guests who have been touched by gun violence. And one Republican has invited rocker, and hunting enthusiast, Ted Nugent.
The spotlight will be on Florida Senator Marco Rubio, as he delivers the official Republican response to the address. Many consider Rubio to be a leading voice for Republicans. Some of his remarks tonight will be in Spanish. Rubio says Republicans don't just want to be the opposition, they want to be the alternative.
At 7:23 we heard Republican Congressman Ron DeSantis detail the priorities he believes need to be addressed by both Obama and Rubio.
A 102-year-old woman from Florida will be among the first lady's guests Tuesday as President Obama delivers his State of the Union address before Congress. Desiline Victor arrived in Washington on Monday after a weather-delayed flight from Miami. She is joining first lady Michelle Obama's guests as a symbol of a determined voter, and of the problems in America's voting system.
2.) Blue Angels silenced? The annual performance at the Jacksonville air show could be eliminated if the automatic budget cuts, known as the sequester, take effect March 1st. The Navy says it could save up to $20 million by not flying the Blue Angels in Jacksonville and 29 other shows.
3.) Another missile launch by North Korea. Today's nuclear test could push China to take a tougher stance against its longtime ally. The White House is calling it a highly provocative act that threatens U.S. security and international peace. President Obama is promising to "continue to take steps necessary to defend ourselves and our allies'' and urge "swift and credible action by the international community.'' The U.N. Security Council will hold an emergency meeting this morning.
Zombie hoax. Several TV stations in Michigan and Montana say they were hit by hackers who took control of the Emergency Alert System. Following the emergency tone, a voice told people that the bodies of the dead were rising from their graves and attacking the living. We found a report from a News Director of one TV station who says they've contacted cyber crime authorites to help investigate. She apologized to anyone who was scared or confused.
Batteries like the one that caught fire on a Boeing 787 last month could soon be barred from being shipped as cargo on passenger planes. People familiar with the effort say a U.N. agency that sets global aviation safety standards is moving to revoke an exemption for the lithium-ion aircraft batteries. The agency's standards aren't binding, but are widely followed.
Three more red light cameras are being activated today. The cameras face east and westbound on Atlantic Boulevard at Monument Road as well as one facing southbound on University Boulevard at Atlantic. If you run a red light for the next month you will only get a warning. But starting mid-March you will get a $158 ticket.
A Clay County woman who faked a cancer diagnosis is facing the possibility of prison time. Mary Ann McCall just pleaded guilty to felony fraud charges against her. Prosecutors say McCall conned local families out of money by claiming she was battling cancer. She faces up to three years in prison and more than $70,000 in restitution at sentencing, which is scheduled today.
People living along I-295 in Mandarin where construction will soon begin on an express toll lane are concerned about the noise. We hear neighbors pushing for walls to muffle the noise. FDOT will lay out its plans for sound barriers at their open house meeting this afternoon at the Ramada on Hartley Road from 4:30-6:30pm.
The Jaguars make another front office change. Vice president of sales and marketing Macky Weaver announced Monday that he will step down from his post to explore other employment opportunities. Weaver has been with the Jaguars for 19 years, he is the nephew of former owner Wayne Weaver. New owner Shad Khan commended him for being a huge part of putting the Jaguars on the map. Weaver will act as senior advisor to team president Mark Lamping for the 2013 season.
