A plan to use vacant buildings

Previous Posts

Good morning. It's Wednesday, February 13th, 2013.

The Big Three things you need to know:

1.) State of the Union.
It's the customary road show following a state of the union address. President Obama heads to Asheville, North Carolina as part of a three-day tour aimed at rallying support for the economic proposals he unveiled. He called for raising the minimum wage to $9 by the end of 2015. Obama asked Congress to focus on attracting jobs to the U.S., training American workers, and boosting investments in infrastructure, manufacturing and clean energy.  At 6:53 we heard Jamie Dupree explain what lines the Republicans most loudly rejected.

Republicans say Obama's second-term agenda will bring more tax increases and deficit spending, hurting middle-class families at the expense of economic growth. Senator Marco Rubio says the nation needs a balanced budget amendment to curb spending and says he won't support changes to Medicare that will hurt seniors like his mother. Rubio's somewhat awkward reach for water has gone viral. Showing he has a sense of humor, Rubio tweeted a photo of a water bottle.   Hear Jamie Dupree explain the piece of advice he'll give Rubio to avoid a case of dry mouth.

Kentucky Senator Rand Paul delivered another counter response, in the Tea Party address. Paul saying Washington acts in a way that your family never could, by spending money it doesn't have and borrowing from future generations.

2.) Cop killer manunt.
Investigators have found human remains in a burned-out cabin in the San Bernardino Mountains. Former LAPD officer Christopher Dorner is believed to have barricaded himself inside the cabin after a shootout that killed on sheriff's deputy and injured another. Police stopped short of confirming it is Dorner'sr remains in the cabin, that burned for hours last night. It's unclear how the fire started.

3.) A plan to use vacant buildings. A change to the status quo that could save taxpayers. Jacksonville city council passes a new plan to require vacant, city-owned properties be given a first look before constructing a new building. WOKV has been investigating for six months the taxpayer impact of vacant city-owned buildings. The city still does not have an accurate count of both the number, and cost, of the properties it owns.  Follow our investigation from the very beginning here.

It was a fire that you could see on your JTB drive and thanks to the many WOKV listeners who provided real-time updates. called to tip us off. Tom Francis with Jacksonville Fire Rescue tells us propane tank explosions caused a large fire at an apartment building under construction in the St Johns Town Center. Around 60 firefighters responded to the two-alarm fire and contained it within about 15 minutes of arriving. The state Fire Marshal is now investigating the fire.

We'll see the Senate Judiciary Committee is holding its first hearing on a comprehensive immigration overhaul today. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano is scheduled to testify as is Jose Antonio Vargas. He's a former journalist and illegal immigrant who founded the group Define American, which campaigns for immigration reform.

Carnival Cruise Lines says it is working to make passengers aboard a disabled ship as comfortable as possible. Passengers have complained to relatives about hot, dirty conditions aboard the Carnival Triumph, which is still at least a day from reaching port in Mobile, Ala. The ship left last Thursday on what was supposed to be a four-day cruise, but an engine room fire knocked out its primary power source, crippling the ship's water and plumbing systems and leaving it adrift.
