Good morning. It's Monday, February 18th, 2013.
The Big Three things you need to know:
1.) Coldest air of the year. We're under a hard freeze warning this morning with temps in the mid to upper 20's early. It's going to rebound pretty quickly with afternoon temps near 60 and mostly sunny. By Tuesday we're in the mid-70's with a chance of a shower or thunderstorm. The dry air and occasional gusty winds will create an elevated fire danger this afternoon.
2.) Another surge in gas prices. The average price for a gallon of unleaded in Jacksonville is $3.73, up 10 cents over last week, and more than 42 cents in the last month. This is the time of the year when gasoline demand is relatively calm, limiting the amount prices go up. You can find the lowest gas prices in your neighborhood here.
3.) Country music star dead. Authorities in Arkansas say country singer Mindy McCready apparently killed herself on her front porch, the same place where her longtime boyfriend is believed to have committed suicide just weeks ago. McCready, who hit the top of the country charts until personal problems sidetracked her career, died Sunday of what appears to be a single, self-inflicted gunshot to the head. She was 37. McCready's two young sons were in foster care at the time.
A man who was shot in the face during a weekend birthday party in Palm Coast is home from the hospital. Police have not announced any arrests following Sunday morning's shooting that left 19 year-old Johnnie Thomas Jr. wounded. We're told as many as 100 people were at the party when several gunshots were heard outside the home.
A 22 year-old Jacksonville woman is dead after a head-on crash on Beach Boulevard in San Marco Sunday morning. Florida Highway Patrol says Joseph Farley was driving a Toyota pick-up near Schumaher Avenue when it crossed over into the westbound lane hitting a car head on. Crystal Sanford, who was a passenger, died. Charges are pending as investigators wait to see if alcohol was a contributing factor.
Double-amputee and Olympian Oscar Pistorius has canceled all future track races as he sits in a jail cell in South Africa. The runner is charged with the Valentine's Day shooting death of his girlfriend, model Reeva Steenkamp, who died of multiple gunshot wounds in Pistorius' home. Pistorius denies he murdered her.
A new study suggests that changing the channel from violent TV shows to education TV can improve the behavior of preschoolers. The results from the study at Seattle Children's Research Institute say that improvement is modest and fades over time. But the lead author says it shows that what children watch is as important as how much they watch.
Teachers in Pinellas County get free firearms training classes this weekend. The class typically costs $75 but was offered for free by the security company because of the growing interest in concealed carry permits among educators following the Newtown shooting.
An Idaho man could get up to a year in jail if convicted of slapping a toddler on a plane. The 19-month-old boy's mother says Joe Rickey Hundley slapped her son in the face on a flight from Minneapolis to Atlanta February 8th, when her son started to cry because of the altitude change. Jessica Bennett says the slap scratched her son below his right eye and caused him to scream even louder. Following the incident Hundley lost his job with a company that designs aerospace and defense parts.
That was a big-time ringer in President Obama's golfing group Sunday in Florida. Tiger Woods joined the president at the Floridian, a secluded yacht and golf club on the state's Treasure Coast. At 6:53 Jamie Dupree explained why the White House press pool was so upset about the game. At 7:53 Herman Cain told us why we will see the automatic budget cuts kick in March 1st and why it's a good idea.
The White House is downplaying its immigration proposal as merely a backup plan if lawmakers don't come up with an overhaul of their own. Republican and Democratic lawmakers tell President Obama that it won't be necessary. The White House chief of staff says Obama wants to be prepared in case the small bipartisan group of senators fails to devise a plan for the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants in the United States.
