Good morning. It's Tuesday, February 19th, 2013. If you missed Jamie Dupree at 6:53 hear which Senator is retiring, and how much turnover we've seen in the past six years. At 8:23 Jamie told us about an important Supreme Court hearing that pits a small soybean farmer against an agricultural giant.
The Big Three things you need to know:
1.) A close call for Jacksonville Police. We're told no officers were injured in this morning's shooting at 300 Arlington Place, at Arlington Road. An armed suspect was shot dead by police during a confrontation with officers. The suspect was a passenger in a vehicle that was being pursued by police. We're told the driver has not been charged as of yet.
2.) Money to unclog the southside congestion. We're told to expect an announcement on transportation funding involving the clogged I-95 and JTB interchange. Governor Rick Scott has a news conference planned just before Noon today. His office is not providing any advanced detail of what he will say. We know the feds have poured nearly $3 million for the designed rebuild of JTB and I-95. JTA says a significant issue is the lack of available funding for right of way or construction.
3.) Proving premeditation. A South African prosecutor charges Olympian Oscar Pistorius with the premeditated murder of his model girlfriend. The prosecutor says Pistorius shot 29-year-old Reeva Steenkamp four times through the bathroom door of his home in a guarded and gated complex in the South African capital. The prosecutor told the court the door had been broken open. The family of the 26-year-old Paralympian and Olympic athlete says police evidence will show there should be no murder charge in the Valentine's Day shooting.
Governor Scott wants to spend $480 million on pay raises for classroom teachers. But Senator John Thrasher is pushing an idea to weight the raise on performance, not across the board raises. The specific amount of the raise is subject to collective bargaining.
We first told you last week about a Navy veteran who suffered serious injuries at his westside home. The victim has died from his injuries and police have made an arrest. According to the Times Union, 65 year-old Jerry Campbell died last Wednesday. Court records show an arrest made the day after the attack. Thomas Campton is charged with battery causing great bodily harm or disfigurement. Police have not confirmed any details about the arrest.
We hear a push to put a moratorium on Internet cafes in Florida. The leading voice is St. Augustine Senator John Thrasher, who chairs the powerful Senate Rules Committee. We reported several times last year the debate over internet cafes, but lawmakers were unable to come to an agreement. The industry says it offers computerized versions of legal sweepstakes.
Investigators now have a theory that Adam Lanza - the Newtown school shooter - had an interest in Norwegian mass murderer Anders Breivik. And they say it may have led him to commit the December 14th massacre. According to the Hartford Courant, the theory is based in part on several news articles about Breivik that investigators found in Lanza's bedroom. They also found thousands of dollars worth of violent video games. Breivik killed 69 people in July 2011 and was sentenced to 21 years in prison.
Florida's new education commissioner says the state needs a Plan B in case the anticipated replacement for the FCAT fails to materialize or is delayed. Commissioner Tony Bennett told the State Board of Education that he'll offer such a plan in the next couple months. The board also received a letter from Gov. Rick Scott pitching his proposal to give all teachers a $2,500 pay raise. The board had no immediate response.
An Ocala father is defending why he put bleach in his baby's bottle. Carron Washington is in jail, where he says a friend told him mixing a capful of bleach with milk was a good home remedy. Washington says he initially lied to Ocala police about what happened, but decided to come clean. He calls the decision a big mistake. The baby girl is hospitalized in Gainesville. Her condition has not been released.
