Conditions are ripe

Previous Posts

Good morning. It's Friday, February 22nd, 2013.

The Big Three things you need to know:

1.) A warm, windy day and start to the weekend will bring a very high fire danger. The Florida Forest Service and local firefighters are ready to quickly respond to any new brush fires. WOKV's Chief Meteorologist Accuweather's Heather Zehr says it's dry. We have low humidity, and gusty winds at times. Since November, we've only had about one-third of the rainfall that we should have had.

2.) We first told you Thursday how a St. Johns Deputy shot a teenager in the leg as he reached inside of a stolen vehicle. We now know what 17 year-old Brandon Rich was reaching for. Commander Chuck Mulligan tells WOKV they found 75 pieces of crack cocaine worth about $5,000. Brandon Rich is facing several charges following Thursday's shooting near the St. Augustine Outlets.

3.) One week until the sequester and still no progress to report on efforts to avoid the $85 billion in budget cuts. As of now, no federal employees would be furloughed with pay, because the goal is to save money by furloughing them. For example, the Pentagon would save $4.86 billion by forcing civilian defense workers to take one furlough day a week from late April until the end of the fiscal year in September. Washington Bureau Chief Jamie Dupree is answering your sequester questions in his blog here.  Hear Jamie Dupree explain whether furloughed workers will be paid back.

323 ship workers at Mayport got notices Wednesday that there could be a potential mass layoff because of impending budget cuts. BAE Systems Ship Repair sent out the notices to its employees as required by the Department of Labor that a company with more than 100 employees notify them at least 60 days in advance about any mass layoffs. The Navy is looking at $4 billion in cuts from sequestration plus $4.6 billion if the federal government continues to be funded at fiscal year 2012 levels.

The search for a killer in Palm Coast. Cops are using video surveillance from a gas station to identify the person who killed Zuheily Rosado last night at the Mobile gas station on State Route 100 in Palm Coast. A customer found the victim, a mother of 6, behind a counter late last night. We're told video surveillance captured the shooter entering the store, pulled a shirt over his face, and then leave minutes later. He was seen heading toward the northbound ramp to I-95. The guy is described as a light skinned man, approximately 5'10'', wearing blue jean pants and a dark t-shirt.

The loved ones of Haleigh Cummings have not seen the little girl since she disappeared from Satsuma in 2009. But now, a new tip and new rumors has the Putnam County Sheriff's Office taking action. Investigators followed up on a tip that lead them to the southern end of the county, but they are denying a rumor that they've found her body.

We're waiting on a bail decision in the murder case of Oscar Pistorius. A magistrate in South Africa is scheduled to rule today on whether the double-amputee Olympian can be freed before trial. Pistorius is charged with one count of premediated murder over the Valentine's Day killing of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

Supreme Court justices preparing to hear arguments next month on gay marriage have received a brief from two same-sex couples arguing that the Constitution prohibits discrimination against them in California and elsewhere across America. In papers filed with the high court Thursday, the couples said that prohibitions on gay marriage that are enshrined in 30 state constitutions amount to a badge of inferiority. But they also laid out several options in the court's consideration of California's Proposition 8 that stop short of declaring full marriage equality across the United States. The court hears arguments on the California issue on March 26.
