What a wet mess

Previous Posts

Good morning. It's Monday, February 25th, 2013.  I spoke at 7:23 with Mayor Alvin Brown on this week's Education Summit featuring Bill Cosby.  Hear what measures of success Brown wants to see

The Big Three things you need to know:

1.) Wet mess to start the week. Rain is going to be around much of this Monday, which could lead to a slow ride to and from work today. Heather Zehr says most of us will see an inch of rain, and some areas could see more. We have a possibility of strong thunderstorms late tonight and into Tuesday morning. The biggest threat is damaging winds, but the chance is pretty minimal. The rest of the week looks to be dry and sunny.

Many people who went to Monster Jam Saturday night were caught by surprise when the skies opened up. Almost immediately the concourses became jammed with thousands of people trying to weave toward the exits. We heard several parents getting frustrated as they tried to protect their kids in the dense crowd of people. By the time the show restarted many fans had left.

Forecasters say they're expecting more wind this time as a second major winter storm takes aim on the central plains. National Weather Service officials in Kansas issued blizzard warnings and watches through late today, a week after the last system came through.

2.) Search and recovery in the Atlantic. The Coast Guard is searching the ocean for possible survivors after finding a man's body 22 miles out Sunday night. Along with the body they found debris including two large pieces of a vessel, ten life jackets, flares and a sheen of oil. They aren't sure if there are other victims, but they're going to search as if that's the case. The Coast Guard says they don't think the vessel has been in the water a long time because there was minimal marine growth on the vessel pieces.

3.) Sequester impact. The White House is rolling out specifics of how the $85 billion in automatic budget cuts, scheduled to hit on Friday, would hit Florida and the rest of the country.  Washington Bureau Chief Jamie Dupree says it paints a picture of job losses, economic hardship, education setbacks, and health troubles. You can see the state-by-state breakdown at Jamie Dupree's blog here. Republicans argue the White House keeps pushing new tax revenues, something they are not willing to negotiate.

President Obama is trying to turn up the heat on Congress to make a deal that avoids the automatic budget cuts. He meets with the nation's governors today at the White House. The state leaders are in Washington for the annual meeting of the National Governors Association.

Four months after Superstorm Sandy, parts of lower Manhattan near the water are still nearly deserted. Roughly 85 percent of small businesses near the South Street Seaport are still boarded up. It could be months, if ever, before they reopen, thanks to the ruin of several feet of salt water that raced up from the East River.

At least 30 NASCAR fans were injured Saturday after a scary reck that sent debris into the stands. Two fans suffered critical injuries but they are said to be improving. Daytona International Speedway officials say it will conduct a safety review of the fencing. The crash Saturday didn't keep fans away from Sunday's running of the Daytona 500. Jimmie Johnson beat Dale Earnhart Jr. for his second win at the Great American Race.

The driver of a Chevy Impala was killed after the car veered off I-295 near Normandy, rolled over and then caught fire before first responders arrived. FHP says they don't yet know what caused the crash, and they're having a hard time identifying the driver.

The 85th Academy Awards celebrated movie musicals from the past decade as well as the 50th anniversary of the James Bond franchise. Winners list:
