The Big Three Stories on Jacksonville's Morning News:
1.) Fiscal Cliff. A few hours after the Midnight deadline, the Senate passed a bill to prevent across-the-board tax increases and sweeping spending cuts to the Pentagon and domestic agencies. It goes to the House for a vote that is expected today. The Senate vote was 89-8, one of the No votes was Florida Republican Marco Rubio.
The bill would prevent middle-class taxes from rising, and raise rates on incomes over $400,000 for individuals and $450,000 for couples. It ensures that lawmakers will have to revisit difficult budget questions in coming weeks as relief from painful spending cuts expires and the government requires an increase in its borrowing cap.
2.) Young gunshot victim. An 8 year-old boy suffers a gunshot wound to his foot while waiting for the fireworks show in downtown Jacksonville. Police say the boy was lucky he wasn't hit in the head with the bullet that was apparently celebratory gunfire. The boy is recovering at the hospital and police are searching for the person responsible.
3.) Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is still hospitalized. We now we know the extent of the blood clot that is located in the vein in the space between the brain and the skull behind the right ear. Her doctors say Clinton will be released once the proper dose for blood thinners is determined. The former first lady did not suffer a stroke or neurological damage from the clot that formed after she suffered a concussion during a fainting spell at her home in early December.
At least four families are dealing with the shock of losing a loved one. It's the result of several car crashes in the overnight hours. A man and woman in an SUV were killed when it hit a station wagon and flipped on Atlantic near Hodges. The driver of the station wagon was taken to the hospital with injuries. A 20 year-old woman was killed when the pickup truck she was in crashed into a pole at Beach and Kernan. It's unclear how that crash happened. The Florida Highway Patrol says one man died late Monday after he was hit by a vehicle on San Juan near Jammes Road.
Gene Smith is out. The Jaguars firing their General Manager on a day known throughout the NFL as Black Monday. Head coach Mike Mularkey had a press conference thanking Smith for his hard work and mentioning how much respect he has for him.
