Warming trend to continue into the weekend

Previous Posts

Turning much warmer with temps in the low 70's today under partly cloudy skies. We have a slight chance of rain today. Beyond a stray shower tomorrow we'll be in the upper 70's and stay there into the weekend.

Today's interview lineup:

At 7:40 hear Fox's Rich Johnson on the criticism facing Defense Secretary nominee Chuck Hagel.

The Big Three Stories on Jacksonville's Morning News:

1.) Rallying to support Jacksonville Principal. Dozens of supporters of Windy Hill Elementary Principal Sharon Sanders tried unsuccessfully to convince the Duval School Board to keep her in place. Sanders is accused of not following FCAT procedures. The school board voted to demote her to assistant principal at Landmark Middle School. She will also take a pay cut.

2.) Confirmation Fight. Some Republicans are lining up with concerns about the President's nomination of Chuck Hagel as his Defense Secretary. But WOKV Military Affairs Expert, Retired Navy Admiral Bob Natter, says Hagel is a thoughtful, level headed leader. Natter says Hagel may have made shaky remarks in the past, but he says they should not derail the confirmation.

3.) A bloody horror. Prosecutors in Colorado are laying out their case against James Holmes in the murder of 12 people at a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado. Holmes appeared not to show any emotion as police officers testified about the bloody scene. Two pathologists testified that the victims who died were shot anywhere from one to nine times.

The man accused of killing seven people at a small Christian college in Oakland, California has been ordered back to court January 28th. A judge ruled Monday that One Goh is not mentally fit for trial and his attorney says discussions later this month will likely focus on where his client should be placed in order to regain his competency.

Four women are found murdered in an apartment in Tulsa, Oklahoma. New this morning, the father of two of the victims says the women were bound, their hands tied behind their backs, then lined against a wall next to a bed and shot in the back of their heads, execution style. A four year-old boy was found inside the apartment, unharmed.

A man gunned down at a Jacksonville apartment complex apparently knew his killer. We expect to learn names of both the victim, and the man taken into custody, later today.
Police were called around 9pm to the Radcliff Court Apartments off Old Kings Road, where they found a man in his 40's shot. He died at the hospital. Police say the victim and suspect have known each other for awhile but it's unclear what motivated the shooting.

Governor Rick Scott sat down with the Obama administration's top health care official to talk coverage, costs and Medicaid reforms. Scott and HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius discussed two pending requests from Florida for changes to its Medicaid program. Sebelius encouraged Scott to partner with Washington in setting up a new health insurance market for Florida. Scott pressed for approval of Florida's Medicaid requests. And the two discussed Scott's concerns about the cost of expanding Medicaid to cover more low-income people under the new health care law.

Going digital in Clay? County Commissioners debate two controversial new proposals tonight. One would allow digital billboards in Clay County. Since 2004 all new billboards have been banned. Opponents say the billboards are an eye sore and will distract drivers. The other proposal would allow veterans groups and similar nonprofits to have up to five electronic gaming machines in their facilities.

It was the most viewed story on WOKV.COM Monday, but few new answers in the discovery of a mobile meth lab in the dugout of a baseball field on the southside. Police on Sunday swarmed the Southside Estate Park and spent hours on the scene. So far we have not been told of any arrests, and police are not releasing any other information about their investigation.

The Jaguars are narrowing down their short list for the person they want to replace Gene Smith at General Manager. Owner Shad Khan has now met with Atlanta Falcons Director of Player Personnel David Caldwell. No decision has been announced yet.

The Alabama Crimson Tide win their third BCS title in four years, manhandling Notre Dame 42-13 in Miami Monday night.
