Let the debate begin

Previous Posts

Here is a look at the top stories on this Wednesday, January 16th, 2013:

The Big Three Stories on Jacksonville's Morning News:

1.) Guns and regulations. This morning we hear the President's plan to attack gun violence. Obama is expected to ask Congress to ban assault weapons and limit ammunition magazines.  At 6:53 Jamie Dupree told us what specific proposals face the biggest hurdle in Congress.  And at 8:23 Jamie told us why the upcoming debate over gun control measures will not break down party  lines.

Sean Hannity says issues like mental health, are not being addressed. He says gun controls will not reduce mass killings. We spoke with Senator Marco Rubio in Mandarin, and he tell us it's violence that's the problem, and he will not support anything that chokes the 2nd Amendment. Governor Rick Scott says any change in Florida law would first require a thorough review of the current law.

New number to add to the gun debate. We're reading a poll by the Associated Press that finds nearly six in ten Americans want stricter gun laws following last month's deadly elementary school shooting in Connecticut. Majorities favor a national ban on military-style, rapid-fire weapons and limits on gun violence depicted in video games, movies and TV shows. 84% want background checks for those buying weapons at gun shows.

We hear from gun enthusiasts, saying New York's tough new gun laws are an overreach driven by political ambition. Governor Andrew Cuomo just signed the new law that tightens a ban on assault-style rifles, calls for background checks on ammunition purchases, and outlaws large capacity magazines.  At 7:40 we heard Fox's Jeff Monosso with the fears of gun owners across the northeast.

A Jacksonville homeowner surprises two people who broke into his westside home. The man was asleep Tuesday afternoon when he heard the sound of breaking glass, and saw two burglars. He fired between nine and fourteen shots, scaring away the perps from his Ortega Bluff home. Police are not sure if the suspects were hit.

2.) We're pushing for a 6th straight day in the 80's. Heather Zehr says we'll fall short of the record 83 set in 1947. It's sunny throughout the day. The first change comes Thursday with temps in the upper 60's with rain chances. Friday is much cooler and rainy at times. The weekend looks seasonable.

3.) A fight for funds. New York lawmakers say the $50.5 billion in emergency aid for Superstorm Sandy victims is much-needed relief and will help people put their lives back together.  The House approved the aid package Tuesday, and officials say the Senate is likely to accept it early next week.

Police say two people were killed when a helicopter crashed during rush hour in central London after apparently hitting a construction crane on top of a building. The helicopter crashed just south of the River Thames near the Underground and mainline train station. Video on Sky News showed wreckage burning in a street, and a large plume of black smoke rose in the area.

He didn't make any promises, but Governor Rick Scott admits he has some work to do to mend fences with the Legislature's black caucus. Scott was blistered with criticism Tuesday during a meeting with more than two dozen members of the caucus. They are all Democrats, and scolded Scott for failing to veto an elections bill that some believed was designed to inhibit minority and young voters. Scott told the caucus that he had nothing to do with the elections bill that he signed into law in 2011.

Another step closer to an Olympic stage for Jacksonville. We've learned Jacksonville has made the top 6 cut of cities vying for the 2016 Olympic swim trials, something city sports and entertainment director Alan Verlander tells WOKV would sell out every night. The cost to the city would be shared by U.S. Swim. We'll know if Jacksonville makes the final cut in April.

We've obtained a letter from UNF President John Delaney asking trustess to start exploring how students feel about creating a football team. Delaney is far from convinced about the future of a team. He's mostly considering the change because other universities in UNF's conferece are doing the same thing and says that could bring both positive and negative changes as a result.  At 8:53 we heard President Delaney explain how much it would cost to add football, and what his biggest concern is.

An update on the dog whose throat was slashed by her owner in St. Johns County. "Amber" is recovering from surgery at Atlantic Veterinary Clinic, and she is a very good patient. The St. Johns County Deputy who investigated the attack says he wants to take Amber home when she's better. The dog's owner, 28 year-old Randal Hart, is charged with animal cruelty.

A Phoenix radio DJ has died in Arizona, shortly after contracting flu-like symptoms while visiting Florida during the holidays. Stephen Seravalli died at his Phoenix home last weekend. He was 38. Seravalli, known as Deejay Trauma, used to workin Tampa. Former colleagues say they saw Severalli just a few weeks ago, before returning to Arizona with what he thought was a bad case of the flu.
