Our 6-day streak of 80 degree days is over. We'll be in the upper 60's to 70 with clouds and scattered showers in the afternoon. Tonight we fall into the 30's! The weekend looks typical for January with temps in the mid-60's. If you missed our final visit with Neal Boortz, and his touching message to Jacksonville listeners, hear it here.
Here is a look at the top stories on this Thursday, January 17th, 2013:
The Big Three Stories on Jacksonville's Morning News:
We first brought you the breaking news before 8am that the Jaguars have hired Gus Bradley as their new head coach. Bradley has been the defensive coordinator in Seattle the past four years.
1.) Gun fight. Republicans are giving a cool reception to the President's sweeping gun control plans. The plan totals $500 million and includes 23 executive actions. Read Jamie Dupree's story here. At 6:53 we heard Jamie explain when the Senate will take up the first proposals.
The proposed ban on new assault weapons and large-capacity magazines has struck a nerve among rural lawmen and lawmakers. In Oregon's Josephine County, Sheriff Gil Gilbertson says a lot of sheriffs are standing up and demanding the Constitution - especially the Second Amendment - be followed. And legislative efforts to pre-empt the president's proposals have surfaced in Alaska, Utah, Wyoming, Tennessee and Mississippi.
2.) Brisk gun sales. We hear local gun store owners saying they have busy since the Connecticut shooting, and especially Wednesday after the President's spech. Bob Perry at Shooting Sports Pro Shop in St. Augustine says his sales the last six weeks are ten times better than the same period last year.
Keeping your kids safe, we find new ideas will be on the table when Florida lawmakers head into session this spring.
We've been following a series of meetings in Tallahassee in the weeks after the Connecticut school shooting. Up for consideration: Putting more police officer sin schools, bulletproof glass, more guidance counselors, and even asking the feds to contribute more to school security expenses.
3.) Burlary Spree Busted. Two people connected to more than 50 home burglaries in Duval and Baker Counties are finally in police custody. Police say the duo used a crowbar to break into the homes, stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of valuables.
A $16,000 discrepancy. We find the new director of Jacksonville's Office of Economic Development expected to draw an annual salary of $195,000. But the payroll document shows Theodore Carter's maximum salary $16,000 less. A spokesman for the Mayor tells our news partner Action News they are correcting the error in the personnel system, and will provide updated information where appropriate.
Our state is facing a $300 million penalty, unless major changes are made to the program that provides health insurance to state workers. Florida has thousands of part-time workers who will qualify for health insurance next year under Obamacare. State law currently prohibits the state from offering health insurance coverage to those workers. Florida lawmakers will have to decide what to do during the upcoming session. It would cost more than $40 million a year to start providing health insurance to part-timers.
A nightmare for Boeing's new Dreamliner. The FAA is grounding the 787's until Boeing can resolve the risk of battery fires. The problem is lithium batteries that can lead corrosive fluid and start fires. And it's apparently more serious than government or company officials told us. The order applies to United Airlines, the lone U.S. carrier with the 787's.
Saying he was duped, Notre Dame football star Manti Te'o is holding a news conference today to clear up the wrenching story of his supposed girlfriend who died of leukemia. Notre Dame says it believes the Heisman Trophy finalist was duped into an online relationship with a woman whose "death" was then faked by the perpetrators of the hoax. Deadspin.com broke the story, saying it could not find a record that the woman ever existed.
