Here is a look at the top stories on this Monday, January 21, 2013. We have one more mild day with afternoon temps in the low 70's. It stays dry today and most of this week. We turn much colder starting tonight. Temps on Tuesday and Wednesday will be much cooler.
The Big Three Stories on Jacksonville's Morning News:
1.) Inauguration Day. President Barack Obama has prepared a second inaugural address that broadly lays out his vision for the country's future while leaving the details of the policy fights over taxes, guns, immigration and other divisive issues for another day. White House aides say the president will not make a policy speech today after taking his oath of office on the Capitol's west front. At 5:53 we heard Jamie Dupree explain how early crowds started forming for the festivities. At 6:53 we heard Jamie describe what themes the President is most likely to address in his second inaugural address. At 8:23 we heard Jamie explain why the President's speech is likely to be short on specifics.
At 7:23 we heard Herman Cain describe what he expects to hear in the President's inaugural address. Herman's show debuts Monday at 9am on WOKV.
The Obama administration says it's confident stricter gun laws can be passed, but it's hedging its optimism by stressing how politically difficult that will be. White House senior adviser David Plouffe said on CNN that gun legislation and immigration reform are two top domestic priorities as President Obama readies for a second term. Republican Sen. John Barrasso said on CNN he doubted that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid would bring all of the administration's proposals regarding gun violence to the floor, to protect Democrats in conservative states.
2.) Gun sales. The Southern Classic gun and knife show was well-attended this past weekend. More than 2,000 people came out to browse the selections of nearly 100 vendors, a large number of people who showed say they're buying now before Washington puts its plan to curb gun violence into action and laws change
Some Florida gun sellers are finding some flaws in President Obama's gun control initiatives. It's being called the most sweeping effort at gun control policy reform in a generation, which includes a required criminal background check for all gun sales. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement says they're doing four-thousand background checks per day.
3.) Teenage killer. A 15 year-old from New Mexico is charged with the murders of his parents, two sisters and his younger brother. Police say each victim was shot more than once, and several guns were found at the home. One of the guns was a semi-automatic military-style rifle.
Governor Rick Scott and First Lady Ann Scott will walk in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day parade in downtown Jacksonville.
The parade honoring the birthday of the civil rights leader runs through downtown Jacksonville and starts at 10am.
A developing story from overnight in downtown Jacksonville. A man who was trying to cross Main and Ocean Streets is hit by a car. He is now hospitalized with life threatening injuries. Jacksonville police are questioning the driver, and say she could face charges.
A pedestrian is hit and killed Saturday on the westside. Jacksonville police say the man was walking along the northbound side of Lem Turner Road when a driver struck him. He was taken to Shands where he later died. JSO is questioning the driver. No details on the identity of those involved have been released.
A man is in critical condition in Orange Park Medical Center after he's ejected from his Harley-Davidson on Blanding Boulevard Saturday evening. The Florida Highway Patrol says 43-year-old Charles Dimech of Green Cove Springs was not wearing his helmet when his bike hit the median and overturned.
Pushing new revenue. We hear Senate Democrats offering their first budget in almost four years. Republicans for years have complained that Senate Democrats last produced a comprehensive budget in 2009 and say that, if President Obama and fellow Democrats want to borrow more money, they'll have to outline a spending plan. Senate Democrats announced Sunday that they will oblige, but warned it will include higher taxes that Republicans oppose.
The Super Bowl is set. San Francisco will play Baltimore in less than two weeks in New Orleans. Among the storylines is the first-ever matchup of brothers on the sidelines. Jim Harbaugh coaches the 49ers and John Harbaugh leads the Ravens.
