Tough love for GOP

Previous Posts

Good morning. It's Friday, January 25th, 2013.

The Big Three Stories on Jacksonville's Morning News:

1.) An uphill road. Senator Diane Feinstein says her proposed ban on assault weapons faces an uncertain future. Feinstein says the military style weapons fall into the wrong hands too easily. The NRA condemns the proposal as an assault on the Constitution.

New this morning we'll see Vice President Joe Biden push the assault weapons ban and other gun controls in Virginia. He's holding a roundtable discussion with experts who worked on gun safety following the 2007 shooting at Virginia Tech. Biden is also calling for background checks on all gun sales and limits on ammunition magazines.

2.) Courthouse costs. The dispute on whether doors at the new Duval Courthouse are ADA compliant will end up costing you $600,000. Turner Construction maintains the doors are up to code but the city is not convinced. Public Works Director Jim Robinson says they're moving ahead with automating up to 200 of the doors, as a cost of $3,000 each. There is no timetable if or when the city will be repaid.

3.) Tough love for Republicans. Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal says they've got to stop being the stupid party. Jindal told the Republican National Committee winter meeting some candidates damaged the brand with offensive and bizarre comments last year. He says it's time to talk like adults, and articulate a vision for America in real terms.

It's a bright idea that could save taxpayers tens of thousands a year. Electrical engineer Bryan Shaffer designed the LED lighting system the city of St. Augustine now uses in its downtown parking garage. It uses motion-sensors to control the lights and keep them dim when cars aren't driving through. Shaffer says the city of Jacksonville follow St. Augustine and install similar lighting systems in its parking garages.
