Good morning. It's Wednesday, January 30th, 2013. I spoke live with new Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley from 7:45-8am. I'm fascinated by Bradley's energy and approach to leadership. Listen to our entire interview here.
The Big Three Stories on Jacksonville's Morning News:
1.) A crashing end to the warm streak. Looks like we'll break the record of 83 set in 1991. It's breezy and sunny, then after sunset the cold front arrives. That brings the chance of strong thunderstorms between 7pm and Midnight. It looks like the worst of the storms will stay to our north but we do have to watch out for an isolated severe storm.
It's a vast and violent storm system is blasting through the South and Central part of the country. Forecasters are checking reports of possible tornadoes, including three in Arkansas. The National Weather Service says northeast Texas, northern Louisiana, northwest Mississippi and southeast Missouri are under greatest threat of tornadoes.
2.) Gun debate. The National Rifle Association and gun-control advocates face off later this morning in this year's first Senate hearing on curbing gun violence. In prepared testimony, the NRA's Wayne LaPierre says he favors steps like boosting school security and enforcing existing gun laws. The husband of former Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords will be testifying for some gun controls. At 8:23 we heard Jamie Dupree explain how soon we're likely to see action on gun controls.
Hostage Drama. In Midland City, Alabama, an armed man shot a school bus driver dead and took hostage a 6 year-old boy. The ordeal happened Tuesday at 3:40pm and, so far, the guy is still holding the child hostage. We don't know the relationship between the gunman and the child.
3.) Red light cameras are activated in Jacksonville. But you're not going to get a ticket if you get caught at Southside and Baymeadows. The JSO is giving a 30 day grace period if you're caught blowing through the intersection. We'll see eight more cameras roll out in the next several weeks. At 7:10 we heard Matt Augustine live from a southside intersection, where reaction to the cameras is mixed.
We first told you during Herman Cain the Mayor has put aside $11 million to invest in downtown Jacksonville and other economic growth opportunities. Mayor Alvin Brown says the money comes from the refinancing of more than $1 billion in bonds. He says the missing ingredient to downtown development is capital.
Using conservative talk radio, we hear Senator Marco Rubio making the case for immigration reform. You heard Rubio live on WOKV with Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity Tuesday, defending the blueprint offered by a bi-partisan group of Senators. Rubio expressed concern with the President's approach, saying it does not link border security with giving illegal immigrants a way to become citizens. Rush told Rubio what he is doing is admirable and noteworthy. At 6:53 we heard Jamie Dupree explain the simliarities between the Obama plan and the Rubio framework.
The impact of military budget cuts are already impacting Jacksonville's Navy bases, even before the risk of sequestration. See the impact in Tiffany Griffith's story here.
South Korea has carried out its first successful launch of a satellite from its own soil. Today's launch comes weeks after North Korea successfully launched its own satellite.
