Good morning! It's Wednesday, March 6th, 2013. It's a windy and cooler day. We could see strong wind gusts throughout the day. It turns cold tonight but this cold snap will not last long. By Thursday we're in the low to mid 60's, and on Friday we're in the upper 60's. The weekend looks spectacular with sunshine and 70 both days. Saturday's Gate River Run forecast is dry.
The Big Three things you need to know:
1.) Dale Reagan memorial. Students at the Episcopal School of Jacksonville will remember their late head of school at a memorial today a year after she was killed. She was shot byt a fired Spanish teacher who had burst through the door with an AK-47 he'd brought onto campus in a guitar case. The shooter committed suicide. Today, students have a half day of school and will gather at 10am for a memorial service and to dedicate the Dale D. Regan Plaza at the Great Oak, a wooden deck build around the tree with walkways connecting to buildings.
2.) A toddler is hospitalized after being thrown down the stairs. The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office says Joseph Izzi had been partying with a friend before he came to the Fairview Condominiums in St. Augustine to smoke marijuana. Witnesses tell deputies Izzi grabbed his two-year-old daughter and threw her out of the door and down a flight of concrete stairs. She was treated at Flagler Hospital for head injuries and is now in the care of relatives. When deputies arrived at the complex, they found Izzi running naked through the parking lot. He resisted arrest, kicking and attempting to bite the officers.
3.) TSA now allowing some knives on planes. Passengers will soon be allowed to carry small knives in their carry-on bags. But after we break down the restrictions, you'll find that your primary pocket knife will most likely not make it on. If you prefer a knife with a fixed blade or one that locks, forget it. And if you have one with a decently thick blade, forget that too - the TSA is only allow blades up to a half inch in width.
Snowquester. The federal government says its offices in the Washington, D.C. area will be closed today as the nation's capital braces for a big snow storm. Forecasters predict as much as 10 inches of snow for Washington, with more predicted for the suburbs north and west of the district. Airlines along the storm's projected path have cut hundreds of flights, most of them at Dulles and Reagan National airports in the Washington area. That has led to several flight cancellations out of Jacksonville.
Attorney General Eric Holder faces tough questions today from Senators about his use of government jets for personal travel. As Jamie Dupree reports, the GAO report shows the feds spent $11 million over five years for the Attorney General and FBI Director.
We'll see the House vote today on a Republican bill that would fund the government for the rest of the fiscal year. It embraces the $85 billion in budget cuts but also smooths the edges of some of those cuts, especially in the military.
Steering the money into downtown development. We find two city council committees giving support to the Mayor's plan to reinvest $9 million dollars into development programs. We first told you about the refinancing of bonds at a lower interest rate that brought in a total of $11 million. The full city council could take up the plan as early as next week.
Florida House Speaker Will Weatherford says expanding Medicaid coverage is a social experiment doomed to fail.
Weatherford opened the annual session of the Florida Legislature with a speech that criticized extending health insurance coverage to roughly 1 million Floridians.
Venezuelans living in Florida and elsewhere in the U.S. are reacting with cautious optimism that there will be change in their homeland following President Hugo Chavez's death. Authorities in that country have already begun announcing a plan for interim rule of the nation and for elections to be called within 30 days. At 7:23 we heard Fox's Eben Brown in Miami with two of the leading candidates.
Jacksonville native Rashean Mathis will no longer wear the teal and black. The Jaguars told Mathis they are parting ways. Mathis said on Twitter: "10 years. Wow what can I say but thank you". Mathis attended Englewood High School.
