Dogs may run down school record in NFL draft

By Chip Towers

ATHENS -- The most players Georgia has ever had selected in one draft was eight in 2002. There’s a very good chance the Bulldogs will top that mark this year.

Seventeen Georgia players and at least one other well-known athlete from another school will be among the NFL draft hopefuls who work out for scouts at UGA’s Pro Day on Thursday morning.

Headlining the event are, of course, potential first-rounders Jarvis Jones, Alec Ogletree and John Jenkins. Fourteen other Bulldogs are registered for Thursday: WR Marlon Brown, DB Sanders Commings, SN Ty Frix, NG Kwame Geathers, LB Mike Gilliard, DL Abry Jones, WR Tavarres King, PK Jamie Lindley, DB Bacarri Rambo, LB Christian Robinson, RB Richard Samuel, DB Branden Smith, DL/LB Cornelius Washington and DB Shawn Williams.

As many as nine of those players have been projected to go within the first three rounds of the 2013 draft, which begins on April 25. The most players ever taken in one draft from one school is 17 from the University of Texas in 1984.

Also working out for scouts Thursday will be Jon Richt. Mark Richt’s eldest son is a graduate of Prince Avenue Christian School in Athens and played college ball at Mars Hill College. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound Richt, who began his career at Clemson, started every game at quarterback for Mars Hill this past season. He completed 200-of-386 passes for 2,936 yards and 25 touchdown and finished his career as the school's all-time leader in completions (567), attempts (1,109), yards (8,169) and touchdown passes (69).

UGA Pro Day will be broadcast on ESPN3.com.
